Majin Boo is one of the strongest villains from Dragon Ball Z. At the same time, with his pink, round appearance, he doesn’t look as dangerous as he actually is. Originally, Boo was supposed to look very different than expected, as early sketches by mangaka Akira Toriyama show.
What can be seen in the sketches? The sketches show the first designs of Majin Boo. Among them are different forms of the villain, some deviating more and others less from his final design. Among the designs are:
- A Boo that looks like the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters
- A frog with long legs
- A fully dressed Boo with two horns on his head
- A mean-looking Boo without pupils but with teeth
In addition, there are other versions that show Boo with a slender stature or with an evil look. You can see the different sketches in the image below:
Some of the designs include the letter M. This is the mark of Babidi, which he uses to brand his subjects. Vegeta also had such an M on his forehead for a while, which gave him special powers.

What forms did Majin Boo ultimately receive? Akira Toriyama seems to have had so many ideas for Boo’s forms that he repeatedly changed his appearance in the manga and anime as well. With his antenna on his head, he can turn other beings into chocolate and gains their energy after consuming them. With the energy boost, Boo changes his form multiple times:
- Fat Boo is his original form. In this form, he is friendly-looking and is the most liked. He is also the Good Boo.
- Evil Boo is the evil side of Fat Boo. He was created when Fat Boo split off his evil side and became Good Boo. He has a grayish skin color and is slimmer than Fat Boo.
- Good Boo did not stand a chance against Evil Boo and was absorbed by him. This led to the creation of Super Boo. He is muscular and looks more threatening than all other forms.
- There are also more forms like Super Boo, who absorbed Gotenks, and Ultimate Boo, who absorbed Son-Gohan.
- Lastly, there’s Kid Boo, the original form of Boo. He is a smaller version of Super Boo and retains his mean look.
With many of the forms, Boo’s nature changes. For instance, Super Boo is solely focused on killing. In contrast, Good Boo is a kind-hearted being. Each form thus has its reason for existence.
It is good that Toriyama did not decide to include all these forms in the manga and anime. With all his sketches, it would likely have been confusing to know which form of Boo is currently fighting.
The names of Babidi and Boo are inspired by a Disney classic. In general, Akira Toriyama had a penchant for naming his characters according to certain patterns.
