Son-Goku had several masters over time who trained him in various fighting techniques. The most iconic remains the master of the Turtle School, Muten Roshi. As an ordinary human, he didn’t have much to do after the original series, but in the manga of Dragon Ball Super, he was able to show how strong he actually is.
Warning: Spoilers: The following post discusses events in the Tournament of Power, both in the anime and in the manga of Dragon Ball Super.
What is it about? The Tournament of Power was an exciting event for many Dragon Ball fans. It was the final arc of Dragon Ball Super and had several universes competing against each other. On the team of our well-known Z-Warriors, there were quite familiar faces.
The biggest surprise was probably Muten Roshi. The teacher of the Turtle School hasn’t fought in a long time, considering he hardly stands a chance against beings like Buu or Cell as an ordinary human.
However, in the Tournament of Power, he showed that he still has it at over 300 years old. In the anime, he managed to knock out several opponents by using technique and cunning instead of relying on pure fighting power. Those who haven’t read the manga of Dragon Ball Super will miss a short fight that makes the old man appear even more impressive.
The new series of Dragon Ball promises exciting battles again: The new anime of Dragon Ball shows many characters in the trailer, but fans are still waiting for one of the strongest
Muten Roshi against one of the strongest opponents of all time
What happens in the manga? Just like in the anime, Muten Roshi also fights in the manga against opponents who should actually be stronger and even knocks them out of the tournament. In chapter 39 of the manga, we see that Goku has no chance against Jiren, even in Super Saiyan Blue. Goku then mentions that he needs to get even stronger.
Muten Roshi contradicts him, saying that martial arts is not about winning fights, but about mastering oneself. To prove to him that it’s not just about raw power, he sprints towards Jiren. Of course, Jiren attacks.
What’s impressive, however, is that Muten Roshi can dodge Jiren’s attacks. Jiren and even Beerus are shocked by how well the old master moves. Beerus even hints that it resembles Ultra Instinct.
Ultimately, Muten Roshi is knocked out by Jiren, as he cannot defeat him either, but he shows Goku that it’s also about movement and not just the new form one achieves. Throughout the entire Tournament of Power, Muten Roshi demonstrated how important experience is, as he knocked out more opponents from the tournament in the anime than Krillin or Tenshinhan.
The community is divided
How was the scene received by the community? Within the community, this fight is not always received positively, as it undermines the power levels. A common argument for Jiren is, however, the rules of the tournament, as AurelGuthrie points out on reddit.
In the tournament, opponents were not allowed to be killed, which made it difficult for characters like Hit as well. Accordingly, Jiren had to hold back to not accidentally kill Muten Roshi. Another argument could be Jiren’s arrogance. Like other opponents, he underestimated Muten Roshi.
Fundamentally, one can also criticize that it should actually be impossible for Roshi to dodge the attacks. After all, Jiren is faster than Hit, and it is mentioned that he is stronger than some gods of destruction.
It won’t be long now until you can play out such battles yourselves. With Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO, a new game is set to be released, and MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen is already thrilled: With Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, I feel like I’m 12 again, reminiscent of the good times with Super Smash Bros.
