The Texas Switch
Marco starts by saying that he actually found the first trailer for Daredevil – Born Again quite good. Upon closer inspection, however, there are concerns. On one hand, the title sounds more like a reboot than a continuation, and on the other hand, there is the difficult production history.
For the series’ big highlight, the one-shots, Marco has the biggest concerns. These are scenes shot without cuts. Sometimes there are hidden cuts, but generally, it refers to scenes shown without cuts.
Marco shows how cleverly the series stages various scenes and allows the lead actor, Charlie Cox, to fluidly swap with the stunt double. In the Texas Switch, the actor in the shot or just slightly out of the shot is replaced with a stunt performer.
In the scene shown, this happens multiple times. Here, he also praises Charlie Cox and says: He is Daredevil.
The Reversals and Characterization
Another element that makes the action sequences so good is reversals. The hero constantly faces obstacles and setbacks even during the fight. Soon after gaining the upper hand, he gets pushed back and has to come up with a different idea.
Marco shows a scene from the series that constantly flips the power dynamics in the fight. This is further emphasized by lighting and changing color schemes.
The third element that the series did so well is characterization through the image. The one-shots represent Daredevil’s core elements, as Marco explains.
This becomes clear in the hallway fight scene of the first season. He explains how it is not about the action, but about the violence. It shows his reaction to hopelessness, but also his vulnerability as an anti-hero. He is afraid but overcomes it, and this is also represented by a restless camera focusing on the violence.
In conclusion, he explains why he has concerns that Disney might not be able to simply replicate these styles. He cites the appearance of Daredevil in the series Echo as an example.
Marco explains that the previously mentioned aspects are missing. The Texas Switch
is visible and not cleverly hidden. The reversals
do not work because there is no dramatic tension in the scene, and nothing is highlighted in the content to characterize him. The attempt by Disney to continue the series will be evident at the latest on March 5, 2025.
