At the gamescom 2024, there was a lot of new information about Diablo 4. Someone asked the developers if Diablo is returning. This is their answer.
Who is Diablo? Diablo is the Lord of Terror and one of the three most powerful adversaries of Heaven and the Angels. He is the youngest of three brothers, following Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, and Baal, the Lord of Destruction. As the three are demons, they can be defeated but not permanently killed.
The Lord of Terror is the main and final boss in the first three Diablo games. He refers to himself as the ultimate evil
and is always the hardest boss in the games. However, Diablo himself has not yet appeared in Diablo 4. You can read more about him and why Diablo 4 still bears his name, here.
At gamescom 2024, MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus spoke with two of the developers of Diablo 4. You can watch the full interview here:
Is Diablo returning? No matter what happens, the supreme evils…
What was the developers’ answer? During gamescom 2024, the colleagues from Dexerto spoke with Production Director Tiffany K. Wat about the supreme evil Diablo. She explained that the Diablo games are extremely popular, and that they currently have the opportunity to explore the various parts of the lore of the world of Sanctuary.
Then she becomes more specific:
No matter what happens, the supreme evils will always return in some way, so it’s about exploring how that will happen in this game. We can paint the canvas, and I hope we can continue to expand it while always connecting it to the supreme evils.
Tiffany K. Wat, August 22, 2024 in Cologne
Wat is likely referring to the fact that Diablo can be defeated but not permanently killed. Accordingly, there is not much standing in the way of his theoretical return in the course of updates for Diablo 4.
Who is currently the villain in Diablo 4? Since the titular villain is not present at the start of the story of Diablo 4, Lilith takes up the mantle as the opponent and final boss. You can read how that happened here: The story of Diablo explained briefly – What you need to know before Diablo 4 comes out
As the main story progresses, Lilith is defeated. For the announced expansion Vessel of Hatred, it is now known that Diablo’s older brother Mephisto will be the new big boss.
During gamescom 2024, a live stream about Diablo 4 was also announced. This should provide new information about the DLC. A PTR for new permanent content was also announced: Blizzard confirms that you can test Season 6 of Vessel of Hatred in advance
