The secret cow level is one of the biggest mysteries in Diablo 4. Over a year after the game’s release, fans were facing a temporary dead end. Now, with Vessel of Hatred, the search continues, and the first step has apparently been found.
What kind of dungeon is this?
- In Diablo 4, there is a puzzle that requires you to collect strange coins. You need these for a hidden achievement along with a title.
- If you go a step further and toss 5 of these coins into the well with 5 different classes, there is a ring as a reward, which is presumably the worst item in the game.
- Now, with Vessel of Hatred, there is another class and therefore another opportunity for a coin in the well. If 6 classes toss 6 coins into the well, a portal opens, as players have discovered:
What does the dungeon have to do with the cow level? The coin and the well have long been suspected to be a key to the secret cow level. Users on Reddit believe: The bottom of the well leads to a new item, the “Ring of Jinx.”
This ring destroys objects around you. It has not been found yet, but players have discovered a message in the well itself:
The stone is covered in scribbles; only a few are legible:
“Grandchild … hope … reaches you … damned … my folly … luck … stolen by … vermin in Nahantu … find more … I am trapped …”
429 notches have been carved around the message.
At the moment, fans are puzzling over what the inscription means. They suspect that they need to kill 429 rats in Nahantu. This would fit, as there has long been rumors that rats can lead you to strong loot.
Such a thing would fit the original story of the cow level, which was implemented after a persistent rumor.

Currently, the search for the cow level still hinges on a potion that has not yet found a use. The treasure hunters have already figured out that they need to kill a bunch of cows to enter a dungeon, but the trail still ends there.
