The pit is an endgame activity in Diablo 4 where you obtain important materials for completion. However, with Season 6 and Vessel of Hatred, this will change. Blizzard is basically swapping the functions of the pit and the nightmare dungeons: you will level your glyphs in the pit, while you get materials in the dungeons.
