In Diablo 4 there is a lot to do in the endgame. Once you have completed the campaign, you will be greeted by a lot of possible content. One of these endgame activities are the Nightmare Dungeons. How Nightmare Dungeons work and what you need to do for them, you will find out here.
What are Nightmare Dungeons? Nightmare Dungeons are more difficult versions of the normal dungeons in the game. However, you can only do the dungeons after you have unlocked World Tier 3. Nightmare Dungeons have various modifiers that buff you in some cases, but also the enemies.
This can change the way you play through a dungeon. For example, blood bubbles can spawn after defeating enemies, which can deal a lot of damage if you don’t deal with them before they explode.
To find or unlock Nightmare Dungeons, you need Nightmare Sigils. These sigils transform a normal dungeon into a Nightmare Dungeon when used.
How do I obtain Nightmare Sigils? There are 3 ways to obtain Nightmare Sigils:
- Completing the Whispering Tree
- You can find them during Nightmare Dungeons
- At the Occultist, you can craft Nightmare Sigils for Sigil Powder and Gold
You can only craft Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist after you have completed at least one Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon.

What tiers do Nightmare Dungeons have? Nightmare Dungeons exist between Tier 1 and 100. They are divided according to the world tiers.
- World Tier 3: Nightmare Dungeon Tier: 1 to 20
- World Tier 4: Nightmare Dungeon Tier: 21 to 100
At Tier 1, the enemies are level 55. For each Nightmare Dungeon tier, the enemy level increases by 1. The maximum at Tier 100 would then be level 154 for the enemies.
What rewards do Nightmare Dungeons give? Completing Nightmare Dungeons gives you 3 important rewards:
- Leveling Glyphs: The only way to level Glyphs is at the end of a Nightmare Dungeon. If you have good Glyphs, you can place them in certain sockets on the Paragon Board to gain even better stats.
- Otherwise, you have the chance for good loot and can level up well in the dungeons.
The last patch in Diablo 4 improved not only bug fixes but also the comfort of Nightmare Dungeons.
Why are Nightmare Dungeons so special? Ultimately, the high tiers of the dungeon are a solid skill test of your own build and character. You can see the random modifiers of the dungeons when activating the key and can prepare accordingly, for example, with suitable potions.
Additionally, the Glyphs are a powerful tool to improve your builds, and the loot and experience are a good reward for completion.
