Players report that they currently cannot play Diablo 4 on Sunday, June 25th. Affected are players on all platforms (PC, PS5, and Xbox). Blizzard states that there may currently be issues.
What is going on right now? Many players are currently unable to log into Diablo 4 and start the game. They receive
- Either a message about an invalid license for Diablo 4.
- Or they get stuck in the queue for ages, with under 1 minute of waiting time.
Players on both US and EU servers are affected. Even in the editorial office, we have the problem that we cannot log in due to a missing license. Restarting the game is supposed to help in most cases.
Update, June 25 at 5:30 PM: Meanwhile, Blizzard states again that they are affected by a DDoS attack. Furthermore, the connection to the servers is impaired.
Blizzard has now also adjusted the notice in the Battle.net client. It now states:
We are currently experiencing a DDoS attack, which may result in higher latencies and disconnections for some players. We are actively working to contain and minimize these effects.
Update, June 25 at 3:30 PM: Blizzard has released another update on Twitter. They are still investigating the login issues:
Blizzard initially reported DDoS attack, now talks about queues in Diablo 4
What does Blizzard say about this? Blizzard initially talked about a “DDoS” attack that caused the issues. This can also be seen in the following reddit post, where the original display in the Battle.net client can still be seen:
But now Blizzard has changed their tone.
Blizzard has already stated that there are currently issues with Diablo IV. So the developers write currently (as of June 25, 2:50 PM) in the Battle.net client:
We are currently observing unusually long queues for Diablo IV. We thank you for your patience as we work promptly to bring all heroes to Sanctuary. Please follow Blizzard on Twitter for further updates.
On Twitter, they also pointed out that they want to investigate the issue and that there could be login problems:
The current update on June 26 around 3:00 PM is embedded above for you. Blizzard stated that they are still working on the issues.
What is a DDoS attack? DDoS attacks or “Distributed Denial-of-Service” are attacks on networks. Because servers or networks can only handle a certain number of requests. Hackers then use botnets to flood servers with requests until the server crashes.
Usually, so-called “zombie networks” with infected systems are used for this purpose. Such networks can be intentionally accessed by fraudsters to overload networks. These also include not only computers but also many other household devices:
- IP cameras
- Printers
- Routers
- Baby cameras
- Hard drive receivers
Theoretically, all devices that can be controlled over the internet. Hackers exploit vulnerabilities in the software of the devices to gain access to their computing power. The owner often does not even notice that their device has been hijacked.
Diablo 4: Servers are online, but there are login issues
What is the current status? Basically, the servers are online and you can also play Diablo 4 if you can connect to the servers. Most players report login issues and a high ping in the game. A high ping means that the server takes a long time to respond to your actions.
The anger among players is correspondingly large that they cannot play Diablo 4 peacefully and slay demons over the weekend. Because you cannot play Diablo 4 offline and always need a constant internet connection.
