The “Tempering” allows you to enhance items with limited attempts in Diablo 4. The system frustrates some players, but with “Vessel of Hatred,” a feature comes that provides relief.
How do players “brick” their items? With the Crafting system “Tempering”, it’s possible to imprint 1-2 additional affixes on items. However, the attempts are limited. This means that once the tempering attempts are exhausted, you cannot further improve the item.
If players do not get their desired result, they refer to the item as “bricked.” The items are not truly “broken.” Players regularly complain about their unusable items and are truly frustrated with the system.
With “Vessel of Hatred,” the first expansion for Diablo 4, a new feature is introduced that allows you to reset tempering attempts. This gives you the chance to temper an item again.

Scroll resets tempering
What is this feature? It is the “Scroll of Retempering.” This allows you to “unbrick” items, meaning to reset the tempering. In a post on X, community manager Adam Fletcher explained what the scroll entails.
He writes there:
- The scroll is one-time use and can be applied to a specific item only once
- The scroll will also be available in the base game
- You can obtain the scroll with a small chance as a drop in the open world
He also notes in a comment that the scroll resets the tempering attempts back to the original number.
Where can I get the scroll? The main source for the scroll is the new endgame activity, the “Dark Citadel.” In this co-op activity, you work in groups of two to four players and fight bosses and other dungeon enemies. You can also earn weekly rewards.
Diablo expert says: “A nice little tool”
What is the reaction? One side of the player base seems skeptical about the new feature. Some criticize that the main source is an endgame activity that must be played in a group. For example, “DiligentRanger7591” writes on Reddit: “So, they said solo players lose nothing if they skip the raid… Perfect.”
Others note that items can still be “bricked” with the scroll. “spizotfl” comments in the same post: “I can’t wait to ‘brick’ the only useful GA item I find, just to use a scroll to ‘brick’ it again.”
However, there are also many players who think positively of the new item. “mpmaley” writes on Reddit: “This seems to be a good compromise.” And “Deidarac5” responds: “Honestly, […] I would say this is better than making an item completely ‘unbrickable.’ […] If you can’t get it right in 12 attempts, you should just get a new item.”
Diablo expert wudijo expresses confidence in his YouTube video regarding the scroll:
Realistically, I expect that you will have more scrolls than items to apply them to, because you can only use them once per item and you really need to find an optimal item to even consider using them. So yeah, it’s basically a nice little tool.
And with the changes made in Season 5 – for example, with the additional attempt per major affix and the overall reduction [of affixes on recipes] […] I think we won’t see many more “bricked” items in the future, regardless of how it all works.
The new feature for “Tempering” comes with Vessel of Hatred in Diablo 4 – so in October. How the new scroll for the crafting system will be received remains to be seen. One announced feature that is already well received in the community is the group finder, which will also come with the expansion.
