How well does Diablo 3 run after the 4k patch on PS4? Stable framerates are achieved through changing resolutions.
Blizzard’s hack-and-slash Diablo III recently received a patch for the PlayStation 4 Pro, enabling support for 4k resolutions. However, 4k support is not the only improvement brought by this patch. More precise changes and graphics comparisons have been presented by Digital Foundry in a video.
Dynamic Resolution on PS4 Pro
Diablo III utilizes dynamic resolution on the console. This means that the game can adjust the resolution up or down depending on the situation. The resolution can reach up to native 4k (3840×2160) in less demanding scenes and areas. In full Nephalem portals or fights with many effects, the resolution can drop to 1080p to ensure a stable framerate.
If you are playing on a screen that only supports 1080p, the currently active resolution of Diablo III will be downscaled to 1080p.
Thanks to the dynamic resolution, the game can maintain almost consistently 60 FPS. Only rarely are there stutters or minor drops in framerate. The downside is that during large fights, a lower resolution is experienced. Problems occurred only occasionally during a 3-player portal, where the framerate briefly dropped to about 37 FPS.
You also notice that various effects have been adjusted. Light effects from candles are much more pronounced on the PS4 Pro than on the PS4 due to the patch.
In summary, the performance of Diablo III on the PS4 Pro is very good. According to the video, it is one of the games that best utilize the new hardware.
