In Destiny , the black market dealer Xur has his big appearance every Friday. With the expansion “Darkness Looms”, the Agent of the Nine becomes even more important in Destiny. He is necessary for the quest ” urn of sacrifice”, which is the pivot for upgrading old exotic items. And of course, he will continue to sell exotic armor and weapons.
Xur has done it. With the expansion, the DLC “Darkness Looms”, he will be the center of the Destiny universe. He will appear in the Tower on Fridays at 10 AM. Tomorrow, on December 12, for the first time in the new version. Here you will find out why Xur is so important and will remain so.
Upgrading old exotic items
He has received exclusive rights: It will only be possible at Xur to transform “old” versions of exotic items into their new version. (And for that, he only had to pay the heavy weapon synthesis to Eris Morn.)
That means: “Old exotic weapons” with values of 272/300 (starting value/max value) will reach values of 302/332 after his treatment.
Old versions of exotic armor with a light value of 24/30 can be upgraded by him to a value of 30/36 or rather: replaced by such a newer version.
Because the items start bare. The weapons and armor can also be handed over to him “mint”, practically fresh out of the box, with the intact new weapon smell, and do not have to be leveled up first.
The good news: The weapons already start with a higher base value than what the “old” versions achieve when fully upgraded. The upgrading should, at least for exotic weapons, also be faster (requires 17.5% less experience). If you “replace” your current fully upgraded light value 30 armor with a new one, you will not fall even in the light level. Because they already start with a light value of 30. That means, such important light levels will remain during the switch.
Xur demands: 7000 Glimmer, the “old” version of the exotic weapon/exotic armor, and an exotic shard. He sells the shards himself for 7 strange coins. But there are other ways to get the shards.
The catch: : He only has 6 weapons and 6 armors (2 per class) available for upgrades each week. So it can be that you have to wait for a while for precisely the item you want to upgrade. But that has always been the case with Xur.
Xur’s Arsenal: What does he still sell?
Xur will probably continue to sell “new” versions of already known exotic armors and weapons in Destiny. These are all armors that have existed so far, and a large selection of weapons.
Since Xur “reliably” distributes these items, he has been the main source of these items for Guardians over the past three months and thus very important. The machine gun Thunderlord or the Warlock chest armor “Heart of Praxic Fire” has he for example never sold, making both items some of the rarest.

The new items in Xur’s arsenal will probably be sold alongside the “old” exotic items, meaning: the probability of getting a specific item decreases from Friday compared to the previous week.
Is a shit storm lurking for Destiny?
Be careful: We will only know this for sure when he appears tomorrow. If he really only sells “new” DLC items that require the DLC, then it would be, as they say, “the shit is hitting the fan.”
This has been shown by the excitement around the Nightfall strike this week. If Xur appears on Friday morning at 10 AM and a roar goes around the world, then the shitstorm from Tuesday will have been a light breeze.
One can already prepare for trouble tomorrow if he has even one “new” item that carries the small “1” in the upper right corner, which means: Only for owners of the expansion.
Which exotic items in Destiny does Xur have new?
He will (most likely) introduce new items to his weapon arsenal: The sniper rifle No Land Beyond and the rocket launcher Dragon’s Breath.
The new auto rifle “Necrochasm” will not be available (more on that later), the PS-exclusive shotgun “The 4th Horseman” probably will not be offered either.
For armor, he will probably bring 9 new exotic armor pieces into his stock. That means: He can offer them, but he does not have to.
For Hunters:
- The helm ATS/8 Archanid.
- The gloves Don’t Touch Me.
- The boots Radiant Dance Machines.
For Warlocks:

- The helm Obsidian Mind.
- The gloves Claws of Ahamkara.
- The chest armor Starfire Protocol.
For Titans:

- The gloves Ruin Wings.
- The boots Mk.44 Stand Asides.
The confusing part is that he offers no boots for Warlocks, but a chest, while Titans and Hunters have boots in their selection – but no new chest armor. Whether Bungie has deliberately introduced asymmetries in Destiny or whether the data miners simply overlooked items remains unknown at this point.
This is what he asks for: For exotic primary weapons 23 strange coins, for all other weapons 17 strange coins, for all armor pieces 13 strange coins.
The catch: It is still not 100% certain whether he sells all of these parts. But one can assume that he probably will.
The exotic engram that Xur always had in the past, which could yield exotic armor pieces, he now only sporadically has on offer.
Xur and the urn of sacrifice – Does the quest lead to the auto rifle Necrochasm?
On Friday, Guardians will also flock to Xur to purchase the “urn of sacrifice”. An item for a quest from Eris Morn that has been open since Tuesday and cannot currently be completed.
This quest could, if data miners are correct, send the Guardians on a hunt that eventually leads to the exotic auto rifle “Necrochasm”, which will be the worthy successor to the pre-nerf Vex Mythoclast, as the new “best weapon” in Destiny, from what we know.
There may be other versions of the auto rifle available before “Necrochasm”, such as the “Husk of the Pit.” However, it was similarly thought about the fusion rifle Murmur (The Murmur). In the case of Murmur, it has not been confirmed: It was available right in the legendary XXL version, and only for the last upgrade will special things be necessary.
Xur is not super important this time, just half super important
Xur will only be the first step of many in the hunt for the “Necrochasm”. From what we know now, Eris Morn’s quest line leads players to the moon and repeatedly against the Hive. It’s about kill missions, public events, and named mobs. Guardians must achieve many kills on behalf of the slightly deranged Eris Morn without dying themselves. This could become really exciting starting Friday.
However: It is likely that the “Necrochasm” in its best version will only be available at the very end, and that one might only reach this “end” in the new year, when the hard mode of the raid Crota’s End opens in January. One will likely have to defeat the raid’s final boss on “Hard” to obtain what will probably be the best exotic weapon in Destiny or to “ultimately upgrade” it.
Anyone who buys the urn of sacrifice (price unknown) will thus only start the adventure, they will not finish it.
Xur has never made it easy for anyone, and the most mysterious figure in Destiny certainly does not start now. And anyone who believes Xur has a Gjallarhorn with him tomorrow also believes in the Xur Christmas Man.
