Destiny: Server down on 1.12. – Bungie is conducting long maintenance work [Update]

Tonight, on December 1st, the servers for Destiny are offline for a long time. Are there any changes?

Update: It’s back online. Around 10:10 PM, the maintenance work was completed. 50 minutes earlier than expected.

Bungie announced extensive maintenance for tonight. Your evening plans may be in jeopardy as Destiny cannot be played during this time. Here are the important time details:

• At 5 PM you can no longer log in. Preparations begin.
• At 6 PM the servers will be shut down. All players will be removed from the activities. So make sure you finish beforehand.
• At 11 PM the work is expected to be completed. All services will be restored.

  

Is anything changing today?

So the servers are offline for a solid 5 hours. Will anything change during this time?

No. There will be no update and no hotfix either. Players should not notice any changes once the servers are back online. So Bungie is just extensively working in the background. They are possibly preparing for the upcoming Sparrow event.
