The upcoming RPG shooter Fallout 4 heavily draws inspiration from Destiny regarding weapons and shooting mechanics. They are orienting themselves to the gunplay and even brought a Destiny developer on board as the lead weapon smith.
Despite all the issues that can be pointed out about Destiny, the gunplay and shooting mechanics were always on a pedestal, beyond any doubt. You can now see this in the “next generation” of games that are inspired by Destiny or, in other words, trying to copy the system.
At Bethesda, they took it a step further and also brought in one of the Destiny designers. In March, Josh Hamrick left the Destiny forge Bungie and has since been working on Fallout 4 , primarily focusing on the weapon system.
Destiny is the benchmark for gunplay in Fallout 4
At Bethesda, Destiny was chosen as the benchmark for their own shooter; both games also ran at 30 FPS, which they considered ideal. However, Fallout focused more on quantity. This was explained by Fallout 4 Director Todd Howard to the print magazine Game Informer.
They are not a team that lingers eternally on designing eight weapons. It is always about scaling that up. They know they will have thousands of weapons, so they needed a weapon system that could handle that.
Fallout 4 aims for top-tier gunplay
The gunplay in Fallout 3, Howard explains, was “meh”, rather mediocre. From the very beginning, Fallout 4 stated: “We cannot excuse ourselves by saying we are an RPG. We need a really good shooter mechanics.” A lot of time was spent on that.
Fallout 4 will be released on November 10 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Then everyone can see for themselves whether it can measure up to the gunplay of Destiny.
