In Destiny, we present the Iron Banner auto rifle Haakon’s Hatchet.
Currently, the Iron Banner is live in Destiny. This monthly PvP event attracts numerous Guardians to the Crucible, who want to rise in the ranks of Lord Saladin. As soon as you reach a high rank, you can indulge in delicious items from Lord Saladin. This week, there is a particularly well-rolled auto rifle available: Haakon’s Hatchet.
What makes Haakon’s Hatchet special in Destiny
The legendary auto rifle, “hand forged in fire by the Lords of Iron Banner”, Haakon’s Hatchet belongs to the mid archetype, with both rate of fire and impact not leaning significantly in either direction. Here are the specific stats:

This weapon comes exclusively with random perks. However, if you acquire Haakon’s Hatchet, which Lord Saladin has on offer this week, you will receive the following perks, some of which are even referred to as “God Rolls”:
- Targeting Adjustments: Aiming with this weapon increases its effective range.
- Balance Adjustment: This weapon’s stability is greatly increased.
- Among the selectable perks, there is also “Perfect Balance“, which significantly reduces the recoil of this weapon.
Thanks to these perks, you obtain an auto rifle that allows for precise kills. The recoil can almost be neglected. If you’ve always wanted to own Haakon’s Hatchet, you should grab it here.
How Haakon’s Hatchet performs in the Crucible
The Guardians who possess Haakon’s Hatchet want to dive into the Crucible with it as well. But what can one expect from this auto rifle?
The auto rifle does not have fantastic impact, nor is its rate of fire outstanding. However, with the mentioned perks, it becomes extremely stable, making it easier to aim and operate the weapon.
However, it takes several hits before you can take down your enemies with Haakon’s Hatchet; its “lethality” is to be considered low. You can more efficiently eliminate opposing Guardians with other weapons. As the US fan site PlanetDestiny admits, you can indeed have good Crucible matches with Haakon’s Hatchet, but these are more the exception. However, this weapon stands out in one aspect.
Haakon’s Hatchet is an excellent weapon if you want to generate many assists. You can significantly lower the health bars of enemies with some precise shots, but it often occurs that they escape with low health. This can be useful for your team, as assists grant extra points, but it can be frustrating for the user in the long run when the opponent simply won’t die.
If you are one of the Guardians who say “Well, this may not be the best weapon in PvP, but I really enjoy playing with it,” then you should choose a shotgun or one of the fusion rifles upgraded in the April update as a secondary weapon. When enemies rush, you need guns for close range, and here Haakon’s Hatchet cannot convince. It is particularly useful at medium to long range.
What experiences have you had with Haakon’s Hatchet so far? Let us know in the comments.
Are you looking for good secondary weapons? The factions in Destiny also have powerful fusion rifles in stock.
