Good reflexes alone are not always enough to play successfully in the Crucible, the PvP area of Destiny: Knowledge and a good strategy are also important. Inexperienced Guardians can really struggle when they are playing their first matches. Therefore, we present some tips and tricks to enhance your PvP gameplay.
A good knowledge of the map
The first tip is directly the most important: If you wander around a PvP map, you are easy prey. So memorize the map with its unique features well. At the beginning, private matches can help you get an idea of the map and its particularities. You can also start private matches solo to casually explore the map. This is also important for communication within your fireteam, so you can clearly tell your team where you are, where the enemies are, or where the attack is currently happening.
However, you will only truly learn the map through experience, by playing several games on it. This way, you learn where most of the fights occur, where you can flank, and where the enemies often push. Remember these peculiarities of the map to use them to your advantage in the future.
Don’t save your Super
Of course, everyone waits for that one cool multi-kill where you wipe out the entire enemy team with your Super. However, such moments are rare. If you’re always waiting for possible multi-kills with your Super, you’re missing out on many opportunities.
Every Super attack that keeps you alive—even if you only catch one Guardian—is not wasted. In the Crucible, it’s about staying alive and gaining control of the map. And the Super is a good means for that. Don’t sit on it forever.
Escaping is not shameful
If you are outnumbered or have low health, turn around, take to your heels, and flee. This is a tip that many Guardians do not follow, and therefore they die more than necessary. If you find yourself in a bad situation, don’t run blindly into doom, but reposition yourself.
If you die, you’re just giving the enemies valuable points. Moreover, you waste time until you respawn and get back into the action. Staying alive is the highest priority. This is how you help your team the most.
Control your ammunition
This tip does not mean that you should be cautious with your special ammo. No, it means that you should grab all the ammo supplies—special and heavy—available and control them. It doesn’t matter if your ammo capacity is currently full—open that ammo box you are passing by. The radius for your fireteam is quite large so nearby teammates can collect the ammo. And above all: Your enemies cannot access this ammo. If you have, for example, three snipers with full ammo in your ranks, and the enemy has none, your team is at a significant advantage.
When it comes to heavy ammo, wait until as many teammates as possible are around you before you open the box. But as soon as the radar turns red, open the box. It’s better if a few team members don’t have heavy ammo than if you all get a Nova Bomb in the face.
Work with your team
This involves two aspects: Firstly, it’s advantageous if you go into the Crucible not alone but always with friends. Communication is key, which is often lost with random teammates.
Secondly, you should always have an idea of where your teammates are located. If you see that many of you are fighting against many enemies in one spot, you can use this knowledge to flank the enemies. Otherwise, it’s advisable not to wander through the Crucible alone. Stay close to random teammates—and let them always go first!
