Next week in Destiny 2 the hunt for the exotic machine gun “Xenophage” begins. We will show you what the weapon can do and why it caused a stir beforehand.
What’s coming in Destiny 2? Since the launch of Shadowkeep, players have been continuously entertained with fresh PvE and PvP content. And with the upcoming reset on October 29, the Guardians will have plenty to do:
- The Festival of the Lost invites you to celebrate with spooky Halloween vibes and thematic loot.
- A new dungeon will open its Hive gates on the Moon.
- Bungie aims to reconnect Destiny’s PvP with the Halo era.
- A new exotic weapon quest goes live for Shadowkeep owners.
The new Exotic: Xenophage
This weapon is about: The exotic previously known as “Bug-MG” now has an official name: Xenophage.
The Xenophage is an exotic machine gun.
This is what makes the insect MG special: The weapon belongs in the power slot and requires heavy ammunition to fire its devastating solar projectiles. For a machine gun, the new rate of fire of 120 is very slow (Almost 4 times faster shoots the popular MG Hammerhead). However, its impact power is at the maximum limit of 100/100.
Xenophage has the perks:
- Pyrotoxin rounds – fires powerful explosive ammunition
- Target Tracker – increases the already high range (71/100) when aiming
- Large caliber rounds – shots push enemies back further
As Reddit user VON_TAR writes, the MG plays differently than previous models. It fires in principle like a linear fusion rifle, just without delay and without drop-off. VON_TAR was able to play this weapon exotic at the PAX West 2019 convention.
What we know about the exotic quest: The new exotic is tied to a quest line that is only accessible to owners of Shadowkeep. Not much is known yet about the exact procedure.
Bungie itself released in the current TWaB (Bungie’s weekly blog post to the community) the information that several options for obtaining the weapon are being considered – depending on what activities the Guardians prefer to play.

Power through alien insects
This caused a stir: Long before the name “Xenophage” was confirmed and even before the release of Shadowkeep, players were already presented with the heavy MG. A life-size replica caused a stir at a community event.
The model surprised with a hidden detail. Instead of using regular ammunition, the MG seems to be powered by an alien insect. The creepy crawly seems to be encased in a kind of amber and gave the mysterious exotic that certain something. Hence the characteristic community name “Bug-MG”.
