This is what the quest is about: To call the ritual weapon “Randy’s Throwing Knife” your own, you must complete a series of tasks in the Crucible. During the quest “Clarification through Fire”, Lord Shaxx requires from you:
- Achieve 450 kills with scout rifles in PvP.
- Earn 2,100 glory points in the competitive playlist.
- Defeat enemies and receive PvP medals until you reach 100%.
What is the problem with this quest? Many Guardians complain that the quest takes an eternity. It is also unclear how to achieve progress with certain criteria. The step “Defeat enemies and [receive] medals” is the biggest annoyance.
A precise explanation of which defeated enemies and which medals count remains a mystery from developer Bungie to the players. Additionally, it seems that progress is bugged in some cases, as indicated by some player comments and an article from Forbes.
Making Randy’s Throwing Knife Easy

- Kills with the scout rifle only count toward progress if you make the last and fatal shot. Assists and the like do not count for this quest step.
- The 2,100 glory points are relatively self-explanatory. Enter the competitive playlist solo or with up to two allies and grind until you reach the rank “Famous”. Thanks to the latest changes, this should no longer be a big problem.
- The last quest step is poorly worded. Defeated Guardians do not give you any progress, and if they do, it’s so little that it’s absolutely negligible because you would complete the quest in what feels like 10 years. However, multi-kill medals (double kills, triple kills, etc.) and weapon-specific medals (multiple kills with a weapon class in one life) do count.
Your percentage display increases fastest when you use fusion rifles for this quest step. For the medal “Cold Fusion”, you need two kills with fusion rifles in one life. This gives you up to 2% each time.
With the exotic fusion rifle Jotunn, progress should be particularly easy. The Rumble mode is especially recommended for this step.
What are ritual weapons all about? Ritual weapons have replaced the previous top weapons since Season 8. They can all be earned through a quest from the respective overseers (Lord Shaxx, Commander Zavala, and the Drifter) of the specific activity.
The ritual weapons have no unique perks, unlike weapons like the Recluse. You have the choice between several fixed perk combinations. These were specifically tailored by Bungie for the corresponding activity from which they originate.
What Randy’s Throwing Knife can do: The scout rifle is in the kinetic slot and requires primary ammunition. It belongs to the rare rapid-fire family and fires automatically with a rate of fire of 260.
The scout rifle deals 47 damage on critical hits and 28 damage on body shots. With 4 headshots and one body shot, you need 0.93 seconds to eliminate an enemy Guardian in PvP.
You first choose between the perks:
- “Quickdraw” – increases stability and reload speed on precision hits.
- “Snapshot Sights” – increases handling while aiming down sights and lets you use the sight extremely quickly.
The second perk selection consists of:
- “Zen Moment” – damage dealt with the weapon increases your stability.
- “Kill Clip” – if you reload after a kill, damage is briefly increased (63 damage for critical hits and 37 damage for body shots).
You have to decide whether to play with Randy’s Throwing Knife reliably and accurately or potentially become more dangerous shortly after a kill.
