On June 4, 2024, The Final Shape, the highly anticipated story conclusion of the saga of Light and Darkness, was released. We at MeinMMO kept you updated with our ticker about the launch difficulties of the DLC.
Now, almost 24 hours later, the situation should have calmed down enough to take a look at the first reviews.
High player influx at launch, but no record
How did the launch go? The Final Shape had a pretty tough start. Apparently, the servers could not quite keep up with the influx of players: Many players received error messages that the servers were offline, although others had no trouble logging in to the game.
Server issues are to be expected at such launches, but with such an important DLC, they must be particularly frustrating. After all, this is supposed to deliver the epic finale that has been in the works for 10 years.
Despite all the problems, Destiny 2 reached an impressive 220,000 concurrent players on Steam, minutes before the servers were even online. The numbers climbed in the following hours as more and more Guardians got into the game.
However, the next problems arose: Error messages, especially CURRANT errors, prevented players from traveling in-game or starting or completing missions. Particularly tricky: Those who get kicked from a mission due to a CURRANT error might miss important story cutscenes.
These problems likely contributed to Destiny 2 narrowly missing a new player record at launch: Just before the errors started to pile up, over 314,000 players were simultaneously in-game on Steam – the most since the release of Lightfall. In the end, however, the new record was missed by almost 2,000 players.
While it is possible that Destiny 2 may still break the record by the weekend if everything works, the difficulties have nonetheless dampened the hype around the important expansion for now – as evidenced by the first reviews.
Players mock: The Final Shame
What do the reviews look like? On Steam, The Final Shape currently holds 43% positive reviews from just over 1,300 ratings, categorized as “Mixed” (as of June 5, 6:15 PM). The main game also felt the frustration of players: there were only 211 positive reviews and 300 negative ones on June 5.
In the reviews, many players vent their frustration. Steam user 3than quips:
The best 40 bucks I’ve ever spent and the best two hours of my life… My favorite part was when Cayde said: “Destiny 2 servers are not available.”
Another player cynically praises the “loading screen simulator” as a pre-order bonus for 50 euros. There are also numerous more or less creative puns surrounding the name of the DLC.
However, other players urge to give The Final Shape a chance: They praise the expansion and argue that server issues at launch are just normal, and one shouldn’t immediately write a negative review.
The following aspects are particularly praised:
- The story
- The voice acting
- The new weapons
So it might be worth waiting a bit longer for the final rating. Given the relatively low number of reviews compared to the number of players, it also seems that most veteran Destiny players are doing just that. The overall rating could change significantly in the coming days.
