With the switch to Steam, players of the loot shooter Destiny 2 can now give their Guardians new names. This leads to some quite curious outcomes.
Why do players change their names? When Destiny 2 was still played via Battle.net, the character’s name was tied to the account name. Now, since the loot shooter can be played via Steam, that’s different. You can now choose the name you like.
Guardians with Curious Names
What names do players choose? Since everyone is now free to give their Guardian any name, this has some quite curious effects. Players show creativity in naming their heroes.
For example, you might encounter characters with the following names:
- BIGWORM, Biggest of Worms
- TMNT – In Theatres Sept. 1
- NPC
- 6 Pc. Chicken Nuggets 1.79
- I hate this game
- Goblin Jesus is near
- Menstrual cycle is near A Nightmare manifests
- Snack that smiles back
On Twitter, a collection of the most curious Guardian names has been opened.
There are even players who figured out how to incorporate symbols into their names. On this page, you might find the symbols and possibly use them yourself.
Players are Creative
Is this something new? No. Players have always been creative in finding names. You also encounter types in other online games who simply make a game of giving their characters the silliest names. Name reservations are therefore always useful so that you can name your character as you wish.
Silly names may not be particularly atmospheric, but they are simply part of an MMO gaming experience.
What do you think of silly names? Do you like it when players get creative with naming, or should one stick to certain guidelines to ensure that the atmosphere of a game is not harmed by strange names? Do you maybe use such a name in Destiny 2 or another game? Let us know in the comments.
