Season 23 of Destiny 2 is in full swing. It goes back to the Dreaming City and to Riven the Wish Dragon. However, it also revisits content that has existed for 5 years, such as the Blind Well. Some Guardians were dissatisfied with this. But Bungie has been attentive to your concerns and responded. MeinMMO summarizes.
How was the new Season 23 received? The first hours in the new Season 23 were not very exhilarating for some Guardians. It went back to the Dreaming City, and the very first mission brought the Guardians into the familiar raid “Last Wish”.
- There, they were to pull a tooth from Riven, the largest and now moss-covered Wish Dragon from Destiny 2.
- If you successfully return Riven’s soul, you are required to complete the Blind Well.
A bitter request for many, as this activity has already existed in the Dreaming City for 5 years. And in Season 23, you had to complete it multiple times for quest progression. This did not really impress long-time players. Their hope for fresh wind in the Season of the Wish was again replaced by the stench of recycling.
Bungie has also noticed this. In an official statement, the developers explained their intention behind the decision and also addressed other player concerns.
Season 23 in Destiny 2 is a farewell to Riven for a final wish:
Destiny 2 tracks what you enjoy and what you don’t
Communication is improving: For a long time, there was little feedback from Bungie. Communication with the developer was severely impacted by toxic behavior from the community. The bitter aftertaste of this hatred and threats from players towards developers and staff was that Bungie drastically limited its communication with all players. At that time, it was said: “Expect no responses until everyone feels safe again“.
However, players want both: quality content and transparent interaction. Bungie’s response to this was the anonymized “brand accounts” of the Destiny2Teams, to avoid further personal attacks in the future.
Fortunately, this account has been providing more feedback about the game and especially player feedback since Season 22. In Season 23, this response has continued to increase, and they are now reacting more directly to criticism, concerns, and suggestions from players.
Here are Bungie’s responses to your feedback for Season 23.
Recycling of the “Blind Well”
The introduction to the new Season with the activity „Blind Well” met with rejection and misunderstanding from many long-time players. Bungie explained on Twitter/X why they consciously made this decision.
They wanted to draw players’ attention early to the higher difficulty level and the new loot in the Blind Well. However, Bungie also assured that this is not a weekly mandatory exercise.
You only need to complete this first quest step and then return to it in week 6. After that, it will be an opt-in activity for the rest of the season. Only the heroic completion of the Blind Well is still required for the seal.
Pistols as an Anti-Barrier Option
Shooting big opponents with small hand cannons is not every Guardian’s thing. However, Bungie referred to the new weapon subtype “Rocket Hand Cannon,” which you can earn since Friday in the Season 23 dungeon “Ruin of the Warmind”.
This hand cannon archetype should give players more options to counter Anti-Barrier Champions with the artifact of this season, even if they do not want to rely on the “Solar Radiance Artifact Perks” or existing intrinsic Anti-Barrier Exotics, such as the Wishender or Revision Zero.
Too little variety in the seasonal activity
The focus of Season 23 is primarily on two activities. “The Weaving” and “Riven’s Lair.” Here, Bungie stated that they particularly valued the loot, especially for those aiming for platinum in the activity.
Furthermore, Bungie reminded that it is only week 1 of the new season.
- In the coming weeks, players will be able to take different paths through “The Weaving,” which will change throughout the season.
- On December 19, a new exotic mission called
Cursed
will also invite you to explore unknown things.
However, Bungie agrees that the Wishglass economy seems a bit too rigid based on initial observations. They are working to improve this so that the path to platinum remains possible even if you haven’t collected every Wishglass shard from each pot.
An Update from the PvP Team
With Season 23, some updates from the new PvP team have also come into play. They have actively responded to player feedback here as well.
- Players have noted that the competitive pulse rifle “Belisarius-D” does not drop for completing the placement series challenge in the Division. Bungie is currently investigating this and will fix it as soon as possible.
- There have also been questions about the availability of the various modes. Next week, Bungie and the PvP team plan to release details on why Control is available as a selectable mode while Checkmate Control is also active.
- Bungie has also addressed concerns and speculations about Checkmate and its impact on the core of the Crucible. They assuaged fears and stated that they do not plan to activate Checkmate in the entire PvP. Instead, they aim for a balance of cooldowns for abilities and weapon optimization that does not lead to certain weapons dominating.
- Players also pointed out issues with the special ammunition implementation in Checkmate. Here, Bungie plans to try various new approaches to improve this system.
- Regarding changes to TTK (Time-to-Kill) in Checkmate, this is regularly optimized. The future goal is to maintain the optimal TTK in line with the current Crucible sandbox. This means that the fastest speed at which you can take down an opponent remains unchanged.
- In the meantime, the PvP team will try to reduce damage from body shots. The result will be an increased ability gap, where consistent headshots will be rewarded with faster TTK.
- In Countdown Rush, there are still issues with the spawns on the new maps “The Citadel” and “Multiplex.” Bungie has temporarily disabled these two maps in competitive mode as a result.
Expect the Iron Banana: While discussions about recycling content in Season 23 continue, Guardians can also hope for upcoming highlights.
The Iron Banner returns with a new tribute mode and promises not only familiar armor ornaments from Year 1 and 2 but also the return of the coveted Iron Symmachy
set as a base set. Additionally, there will be a very special and truly banana-themed badge this season.
The coming weeks could thus hold further surprises and innovations while Guardians continue to tackle the challenges of Season 23.
What do you think of Season 23 so far? Did you feel disappointed when you were sent to the Blind Well? Or was this detour not so bad? We look forward to your feedback in the comments.
By the way, the new dungeon “Ruin of the Warmind” in Destiny 2 has received good feedback. Players even find it is “probably the most beautiful dungeon that Bungie has ever made!” Destiny 2: All playable dungeons in 2023 in overview – Here’s how to master them
