Bungie released more information this week in a blog post about the future of Destiny 2 in 2025. The developers of the loot shooter also discussed changes to the dungeons.
Destiny 2 is set to receive 2 expansions each year. The first expansion of a year will bring us a new raid, while the second will provide a new dungeon. Bungie already informed us about this a few weeks ago.
However, the developers of Destiny 2 have prepared another announcement that confirms the end of an unpopular change from 2021.
No additional costs for dungeons
What change is Bungie reversing? Since 2021, players in Destiny 2 had to purchase “Dungeon Keys” (or a Deluxe Edition) if they wanted to play a new dungeon. It was no longer sufficient to just own the standard version of an expansion.
This change was criticized by the community back in 2021 on Reddit, as Bungie created an additional barrier for players to participate in endgame content. There were concerns that even fewer players would engage with dungeons since they would have to pay extra for them. Additionally, some players interpreted this as Bungie creating another source of revenue.
What is changing now? In a blog post from September 25, Bungie announced that the dungeon that will be released with the second expansion in 2025 will be included in the expansion. They further explained that players will no longer need a separate dungeon key.
A few weeks ago, Bungie announced that seasonal content will be free in the future. In the accompanying graphic (via bungie.net), attentive players already noticed that “New Dungeons” were listed among the contents of the expansions and suspected the end of dungeon keys.
Bungie has now officially confirmed this assumption.
How is this being received by the community? Mixed. Many players are reacting very positively to the announcement, although there is often a lingering accusation towards Bungie for the initial introduction of dungeon keys.
For example, one player wrote on X.com: “This should have always been the case. The retraction is nice and all, but don’t expect me to praise it.” Another user added: “Dungeon keys were a terrible idea and just a way to make a few extra dollars.” (via X.com)
However, there are also negative voices. The criticism is that there is now only one dungeon available. Players believe they only received a second dungeon per year in the past because dungeon keys existed. Other users complain that they now have to pay for expansion content (dungeons) that they do not want to play.
In October, Destiny 2 will receive a new dungeon as part of the “Revenants” episode, which also holds a special novelty for players. You can find out more on MeinMMO: Destiny 2 is getting a new dungeon that will offer you a unique challenge for the first time
