The MMO shooter Destiny 2 is a hit. Activision says so, and Bungie nods in agreement. Next, they present some impressive numbers.
It would have been a surprise if Activision and Bungie hadn’t released the “Yay, we are a hit!” press release. It arrived punctually today, Friday. While Activision and Bungie are relatively sparing with the figures, overall: Yes, Destiny 2 has made a big impact.
Biggest Launch of the Year – Strong Digitally
Destiny 2 was released on September 6 for PS4 and Xbox One – the PC release is scheduled for late October. As Activision happily announces, it is the “biggest console launch of 2017 so far”.
Additionally, Destiny 2 has broken further records in terms of player engagement and digital sales in the first week.
Destiny 2 sold more copies in pre-order than Destiny 1. Particularly in digital sales, there were more sold on Day 1 in the PlayStation Store than the first part.
1 Million Players Online Simultaneously – For 8 Days in a Row
Bungie also states: “We had more than 1 million players online concurrently at peak for 8 days in a row.”
Destiny 2 is also a hit on Twitch. Here, it has already amassed 600,000,000 minutes of viewing time. When the Destiny 2 raid went live on September 13, it shot to 1st place in simultaneous viewers on Twitch.
In Stores, Destiny 1 Probably Sold Better – At Least in the UK
So much for the press release. A few days ago, other news about sales figures emerged, not from Bungie, but landed in the NeoGaf forum. There, the “physical sales”, meaning the box sales, of Destiny 1 were compared with Destiny 2 in the United Kingdom.
In this comparison, Destiny 2 did not perform so well. Destiny 1 sold 192,000 units for PS4 and 17,000 for PS3 in the UK back in 2014, while Destiny 2 only sold 101,500 units for PS4 in 2017. That’s almost half. For Xbox One, however, the number has remained almost the same.
This could also be because in 2014, more PS4 players went to stores and bought a box. Today, it has become established to digitally purchase a game from the PS4 store.
