Bungie has finally revealed when players can expect to get the faction-specific masterwork catalysts in Destiny 2 after almost a year of waiting. Will the team-based battles return as well?
These are the catalysts: Many players have been waiting since the end of Season 3 for the promised opportunity to earn the faction-specific masterwork catalysts. Specifically, it involves the catalysts for
- the pulse rifle Graviton Lance
- the hand cannon Sunshot
- the auto rifle Hammerhead
Why are many waiting for these catalysts? These exotic catalysts were tied to a specific faction as a reward during the team-based battles. Since the faction rallies were removed from the game at the end of Season 3 (early September 2018) for renovation purposes, these catalysts can no longer be earned.
When and how exactly these three catalysts can be earned again is still unknown. In June 2018, there was the promise that there would be opportunities to earn these catalysts even beyond Season 3. But Guardians are still waiting for this in May 2019.
By the way: Four new catalysts were added to the game just recently.
When are these catalysts supposed to return? In a post on the official Destiny forum by Bungie, a player recently demanded that the catalysts from the raid and the faction rallies be integrated into strikes or the Crucible. Because it’s almost impossible to get other players excited about the old raids. And the faction catalysts are not in the game at all.
Following that, there was an official response from Community Manager dmg04. He explained that the faction-specific catalysts will return in the summer (likely in Season 7). More details regarding the sources will come as that time approaches. He will also pass the suggestion for raid catalysts to the development team.
Will the team-based battles return with the catalysts? This is still unknown. Bungie has not revealed whether they have decoupled these catalysts from the factions or if they still need to be earned through the team-based battles. The studio has only addressed the return of the three catalysts.
However, some fans consider the return of the faction battles in this context quite plausible. Others also believe that these masterwork catalysts could be earned from other sources – for example, during the summer event “Solen’s Vengeance”. However, these are just pure speculations.
What are masterwork catalysts anyway? Since the Warmind expansion in Destiny 2, there has been the possibility to upgrade numerous exotic weapons to a so-called masterwork. This is essentially an upgrade of the respective weapon. It improves certain stats of the weapon, or it even gets additional perks.
To unlock a masterwork variant of an exotic weapon, you need the corresponding exotic masterwork catalyst. These can be earned from various sources and must then be leveled up.
