The superhero and supervillain MMO DC Universe Online is quite a success for Sony Online Entertainment. There are currently 18 million registered users. Recently, the trend is towards the Playstation 4. Console players spend more money in the Free2Play MMO than PC players.
DC Universe Online launched on PC and Playstation 3 in 2011, followed by the Playstation 4 a year later. There are now 18 million registered players in the Free2Play MMO. However, SOE’s president John Smedley does not reveal how many of them are really active in an interview with VentureBeat.
The superhero MMO has clearly become a console affair: 76% of the playtime is distributed between PS3 and PS4. And especially the Playstation 4 is on the rise.
Interestingly: Console players are also more generous than their PC counterparts. They spend significantly more money in the Free2Play MMO. In Smedley’s view, this is because console players are “hardcore gamers” and therefore more willing to buy something in a game.
In the future, SOE aims to develop its Free2Play MMOs for PC and consoles. Next up for SOE is the port of Planetside 2 to the Playstation 4, followed by the zombie MMO H1Z1 .
