In the upcoming PvP MMORPG Crowfall, you can improve your hero through skills, like in other role-playing games. The developers have now explained how this works. It primarily revolves around time.
The entire system is roughly based on three spheres: Class, Race, and Profession. In these three areas, there are corresponding skill trees with individual abilities.
Training Skills Takes Time
Skill trees are expanded over time based on certain prerequisites. This means that you gradually unlock new abilities. Therefore, it is not possible to train every skill directly from the start.
- To improve a skill, select the skill that you want to increase.
- Over time, this skill will then train automatically. Once the training time has elapsed, the ability will increase in rank. Then, you select another skill that should be trained.
- If the training would be completed while you are offline, the rank of the skill will not automatically continue to increase. In this case, the training time will go into what are called “Time Banks.”
- The time stored in these Time Banks is then used when you are back in the game and improves your abilities. However, you cannot freely use this training time for every skill. “Time Banks” only apply to the selected skill tree during training. Thus, time you accumulated, for example, in the combat tree cannot be used for the specific knight abilities, as they are in a different skill tree.
Collect Time in the “Time Bank”
The idea of the Time Banks is that “no time is lost” – just because a player is currently offline. The Time Banks serve as a buffer to save some time so that it does not “go unused.” Non-VIP players can accumulate up to 24 hours of time, while VIP players can accumulate up to 30 days.
An example: You want to improve your skill “Leather Armor” from rank 2 to rank 3. You select this skill, and the training automatically progresses over time. If you go offline, the training time goes into the “Time Bank” and does not continue in the skill. When you log back into the game a few hours later, you will see that you have accumulated several hundred minutes of training time. You then use this time in the corresponding skill tree. This way, you not only improve your leather armor ability from rank 2 to rank 3 but might even raise it to rank 4.
The time you were offline has therefore not been lost. It has been saved and can be used in the skill tree to further improve abilities.
Transferring Training Time to Other Skills
At a later point, the developers want to introduce so-called “Skill Tomes.” These books allow you to use time in the “Time Bank” for skills from other skill trees as well. So, if you have collected hundreds of minutes in combat skills but want to use them for another skill tree, you can transfer these minutes from the “Time Bank” into the skill tome. In the skill tome, you then select the skill you would like to improve and transfer the training time to it.
However, this process costs a certain percentage of the accumulated time. The costs depend on the level of the skill rank you want to train. You cannot transfer all collected time to another skill. The skill tome is destroyed after the transfer. Furthermore, there are specific restrictions for these systems that are a bit more relaxed for “VIP” players, or premium players, than for others.
