SCUM was a huge hit after the start of the Early Access phase in the summer. What is the state of the game today, after a major update has expanded the game world with new islands and a coal mine?
How is SCUM doing today? SCUM, the survival game where you fight for your freedom as a prisoner, launched last summer with nearly 19,000 concurrent players according to Steamcharts in the Early Access phase. Since then, the player count has dropped to around 1,600. Even the reviews are currently showing a “mixed” rating with 53% on Steam.
What are the community’s criticisms? Players mainly criticize bugs but also the lack of content. At the beginning, the title was still interesting, but there was too little to do to keep players engaged. This has hardly improved over the months since the Early Access launch.
Additionally, performance and the user interface are being criticized. The developers still have a lot of work ahead of them.

What has happened now? The developers have now released a major update. This expands the map of the game world.
- 24 new islands have been added.
- You now explore a coal mine.
- The M1887 shotgun has been introduced as a new weapon.
- Lock picking has been revised.
- You can no longer store items in world containers.
- Trucks are now available in new variants.
How is the update received by the players? Fans are excited about the new content. However, there is also criticism. The new locations are still empty. So far, nothing can be found on the islands and there is currently nothing to be gained in the mine. The developers promise to quickly provide content for these locations.
What do the players wish for? Fans would like to see that especially the many bugs are fixed. For instance, some doors cannot be opened properly and ammunition cannot be picked up correctly from objects, but only from the ground.
Additionally, players would like a farming system to be able to grow food.
Fans generally see great potential in SCUM but fear that player interest may wane before the title can reach its full potential.
