Dark and Light könnte ein kleineres MMORPG werden, als alle glauben

The MMORPG Dark and Light has an odyssey behind it that probably deserves its own article. The new development studio Snail Games has now also stated that the scope of the game is likely to be less than what fans of the original MMO would have expected.

Under the leadership of the original developer studio NPCube, Dark and Light was supposed to feature a 40,000 square kilometer fully simulated sandbox world about ten years ago. But that didn’t happen. The project was too ambitious and ultimately failed because of that. However, the project sparked interest from Snail Games in 2008, which bought the rights and has been working on a new version of the game ever since. They even switched to Unreal Engine 4 to provide a visual feast.

Not an MMORPG, but just an MRPG

However, the Dark and Light that Snail Games is developing is not a 1:1 copy of the original. This already starts with the scope, which Associate Producer Jonathon Stebel has now discussed. He stated that one should not expect such high player numbers as in other traditional MMOs. However, they currently cannot name any numbers yet, as only the stress test will show how many players the servers can host. Stebel further explains that Dark & Light should be seen more as an “Open World Multiplayer Fantasy Game” with survival and MMO aspects rather than a Massively Multiplayer RPG.

No harsh survival elements

Furthermore, the survival elements will not be as harsh as in other genre representatives. Hunger and thirst will not be as prominent. Nevertheless, one must eat and dress accordingly for certain climate zones. The world is supposed to consist mostly of land, but there will also be underwater areas. Just like flying islands, which is why flying mounts will play a role.

A release date for Dark and Light has not yet been set.
