The developer CD Projekt Red has announced that support for hard drives in Cyberpunk 2077 will be discontinued. An SSD is now required for all quality levels.
After the popular Witcher series, the Polish developer has created a large sci-fi world with an exciting story in Cyberpunk 2077. With the major update 2.0 and the soon-to-be-released expansion “Phantom Liberty,” CD Projekt Red has brought the game back into the community’s focus. A promising trailer was already shown at gamescom 2023.
At the same time, the system requirements have been updated. Support for hard drives will be discontinued. As a new minimum, you now need an SSD drive. Additionally, a top model is required for the highest quality level.
SSD as minimum requirement – ‘Important part of the game improvement process’
Cyberpunk 2077 will receive many improvements and new gameplay content with update 2.0 and the story expansion “Phantom Liberty.” You can find all of this in our colleague Sophia’s hands-on test:
What else has been announced? At the same time, the developer CD Projekt Red is adjusting the current system requirements for the role-playing game. In all three mentioned quality levels (minimum, recommended and ultra), normal hard drives (HDD) will no longer be supported. The game is to be installed only on an SSD drive to achieve faster loading times and improved overall performance.
What SSD is now required? At the ultra graphics level, even an NVME SSD is required. These currently offer the fastest interface and the best performance level among SSDs. With ray tracing activated, the developer recommends this already for the recommended system requirements.
The new system requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 can be read in detail directly on MeinMMO.

This way, players should achieve a minimum of 30 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with their hardware. For the two higher levels with and without ray tracing, CD Projekt Red states an expected performance of 60 FPS.
What are the reasons for the adjustment? This is justified by a new requirement standard to clearly present the minimum PC configuration required for fans of the action RPG:
The reason for these changes is that updating the requirements is an important part of the game improvement process as well as the improvement and addition of new features.
Can you still install Cyberpunk 2077 on a hard drive? Yes, the developer emphasizes that Cyberpunk 2077 will still be playable on these despite the lack of support for hard drives. If there are problems with the game, you will then be forced to move/install it on an SSD to receive support.
