With the 2.0 update, Cyberpunk 2077 gets a revamp, with the expansion Phantom Liberty following on September 26. If you are wondering whether to jump into the game or wait for Phantom Liberty, here on MeinMMO you will find guidance for your decision.
With the 2.0 update, the base game has already been expanded with some content: The skill system has been updated, the cyberware has been brought up to date, and some new mechanics have been integrated into Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, CD Projekt has released new system requirements for Cyberpunk 2077.
Although there are only a few days left until the release of Phantom Liberty, the legitimate question arises: Should you start the game with the 2.0 update or wait for the expansion?
3 Ways to (Re)Start in Cyberpunk 2077
In principle, the decision depends on your status regarding Cyberpunk 2077. Are you returning to the game after some time – perhaps even after years? Are you just starting now, without previous experience? Have you completed the base game, or are you still in the middle of it?
For Returnees and Multiple Players
If you have already completed Cyberpunk 2077, it makes sense to wait for Phantom Liberty if you want new quests and a new story. However, if you’re eager to get a feel for it, you can do that already now.
You can bridge the time until the expansion by redistributing your skill points, checking out the revamped crafting, the cyberware, and the new police system, and trying out builds.
This would give you a good foundation for Phantom Liberty, allowing you to fully concentrate on the new story, the new tasks, and the new area starting from the release. If you belong to those who play through games multiple times, now would be the perfect opportunity for that.
For Newcomers
Since there are only a few days left until the release of Phantom Liberty, it makes sense to start playing Cyberpunk 2077 now and complete the main story. This way, you have some time to familiarize yourself with the mechanics before heading into the new area of Dogtown.
Until Phantom Liberty, you have the opportunity to complete a few side quests in addition to the main story, gather money for cyberware and upgrade it, level up your skills, and explore Night City.
For the Particularly Curious
With the release of Phantom Liberty, there is an option to jump directly into the new content, which is a blessing for all those who are extremely curious about the new quests and the new area. And it doesn’t matter how far you are in Cyberpunk 2077 at that point.
You have these options:
- You start the game regularly and begin right from the beginning, without skipping any content. Phantom Liberty will be available as soon as you are far enough in the main story.
- You skip the main story and start directly with Phantom Liberty at character and street cred level 15. All content from the base game and Phantom Liberty is available from that point on. Attribute points will be automatically distributed but can be reset. Your character has some weapons, clothes, and cyberware. In the loading screen, you essentially receive a “Previously on.”
The developers’ tip in a tweet from September 19 reads as follows:
Hey, Chooms! While you can continue the game with a current character in an existing save, we recommend starting anew after the 2.0 update. Due to the multitude of changes, a restart will enhance your overall gaming experience!

If you skip the main story without having already played it, you will miss out on quite a bit, especially since many changes have been made with the 2.0 update.
