In 2020, Crowfall started its closed beta. A release was even planned. In early 2021, the developers gave a glimpse of new content, including a higher level cap. But when the MMORPG will finally be released is still uncertain.
What happened at Crowfall in 2020? At the beginning of last year, Crowfall was supposed to start its closed beta. However, a bug prevented it from starting in February.
Finally, in August, the closed beta launched, which is almost an open one. At least anyone can apply for access for free and every backer received friend codes to invite up to 5 players.
We at MeinMMO tried Crowfall and came to a mixed conclusion:
- At the PvP level, it is quite interesting and offers a great variety of classes and races.
- However, the combat system, some bugs, performance, and particularly the interface are still problematic.
In fact, it was even said that if everything went well, Crowfall should be released in 2020. But that did not happen.
What will happen in 2021? In December, CEO J. Todd Coleman announced that he would talk about a game at the end of 2021, not about something that is still to become a game. This indirectly announced the release for 2021.
When this will exactly take place is currently unknown. Instead, the developers revealed what will come in the next update. And that’s a lot.
New Max Level, Attribute System, and Ingame Crowpedia
What will change with the next update? With Patch 6.4, there will be many revisions of existing systems. The developers emphasize that they have taken the beta feedback to heart. The following plans have emerged:
- A revision of the level system. The so-called “Vessel Advancement” starts at level 30 and will begin in the “Dregs”, Crowfall’s GvG. Players will be able to level from level 30 to 35.
- A revision of the attribute system, which will allow the spent points to have more impact on your build.
- A completely new lobby interface to make it easier for players to switch between worlds.
- The removal of mobile banks in the campaigns
- New world rules that will affect deaths, death timers, and so on.
- The introduction of an ingame version of Crowpedia so players can look up everything.
- Additionally, work on optimizing and removing bugs will continue in Crowfall. There was also a lot of criticism of the MMORPG in the beta.
Patch 6.4 is expected to be released before the official launch of the game.
You can listen to all the details about the new patch in the developer Q&A:
Constant revisions but no release: Crowfall was one of the first crowdfunding MMORPGs, but it has been in development for more than 5 years.
Although the game has raised a lot of money through Kickstarter, backers, and various funding injections, instead of leading to a faster release, development has even been delayed. Old systems have repeatedly been revised, such as the skill system recently or soon the levels and attributes.
Promises regarding the release have also been made repeatedly, but they have not been kept. However, this is not only the case with Crowfall.
Many crowdfunding games go through this process and it leads to a lot of frustration. MeinMMO editor Schuhmann has explained this situation in detail:
Why new MMOs through crowdfunding like Star Citizen frustrate us
