In Asia, CrossFire is an incredibly successful online shooter. With CrossFire 2, the developer aims to achieve success in the West as well.
On lists discussing the “games that have made the most money“, you will always find “Crossfire” along with LoL, WoW, or Overwatch as one of the most lucrative Free2Play games in the entire world. Here in the West, we hardly know the shooter from Asia. However, it is more popular there than our big shooter franchises like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, or Battlefield.
This is what “Crossfire” looks like in Korea – it is incredibly popular there. Among “Free2Play” games, only League of Legends makes more money worldwide:
New Shooter CrossFire 2 aims to be an AAA game with a story that also works in the West
At ChinaJoy, the game’s developer, Smilegate, has now announced that they are planning a sequel “CrossFire 2” and are collaborating with Remedy, the company behind Max Payne and Alan Wake. The goal is to elevate the shooter concept with story elements and new gameplay ideas to a true AAA title.
New technology, new gameplay, and more are intended to make CrossFire 2 not only a hit in Asia but also attract worldwide attention. Additionally, there seems to be plans to consider making a movie. Modestly, they believe it could surpass the incredibly successful Warcraft movie in China.
Smilegate is also behind the MMORPG with hack and slash influences Lost Ark. Perhaps this newfound love for the West signifies that Lost Ark might finally progress towards a Westport – there has been very little news on that.
