The community of Final Fantasy XIV is known for its creativity – be it with pretty transmogs or, as of late, apparently with new ways to play. A player has ingeniously repurposed an old Duel Disc from the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game into a controller and operates it with the associated cards.
What did the player do? The player and Reddit user SuperLouis64 plays Final Fantasy XIV now with a Duel Disc. This device is typically worn on the arm by “duelists” in Yu-Gi-Oh! to lay out their cards and summon monsters – for duels while standing.
However, instead of playing cards, SuperLouis64 has adapted the deck. The different positions provide various inputs, activated by drawing and placing cards.
On his YouTube channel, he often showcases such crazy ideas. For instance, he previously played Dark Souls with bananas (via YouTube.com) – similar to how someone else already played Overwatch with bananas.
How does it work? Louis plays an astrologian in Final Fantasy XIV. This healer job can draw cards from his deck as a mechanic and enhance the group with them. When Louis places a card in a specific position on his Duel Disc, he grants a buff to a team member.
When he draws a new card from the Duel Disc, his character in the game also draws one. The different positions apparently correspond to different players in his group. However, he does not only play with the Disc. Movement still occurs via the keyboard. Here’s how it looks in action:
Healing dungeons with Yu-Gi-Oh! cards
How well does it work? To prove that the operation works, Louis masters one of the dungeons of the MMORPG. He himself plays the healer astrologian and is accompanied by two DPS players and a tank.
The end of his run is not shown, but apparently it worked, and many fans are thrilled. On Reddit, a user even mentions the “future of gaming.”
Can I replicate this? Other players want to replicate what SuperLouis64 did and modify their old Duel Disc. With a little tinkering, it should even be possible; in his video, Louis explains how he did it (via YouTube.com).
For simpler content or to develop a new gaming experience, such an exotic controller will surely work. However, when it comes to tougher raids, you will probably need more accurate input methods. Or you can just let it draw, as long as everyone is okay with it:
Yes, Twitch streamers have certain advantages in MMOs and no, that is not a problem
