For some tools and weapons in Valheim you need core wood early in the game. In the MeinMMO guide, you’ll learn where to find it, collect it, and what it is used for.
What is core wood? Core wood is a special type of wood in the survival game Valheim and serves as a material for better items than those made from regular wood. Consequently, it is also harder to find.
The sturdy wood is suitable for building wooden cabins and is used to reinforce existing structures. It is also used in crafting tools and weapons.
Finding and chopping core wood
Where can I find core wood? Core wood can be found in the “Dark Forest” biome. This is usually located near the Meadow biome. If you chop down pines and break down the trunks, you will receive core wood and regular wood.
Besides pines, other tree species can be found in the Dark Forest, such as firs, which do not contain core wood. When searching for pines, check the tree canopies. Pines are taller than firs, and with your head held high, you’ll find your target tree much faster.
How to chop down pines: To chop down pines, you only need a stone axe. However, it’s better and faster with a flint axe or even a bronze axe. We recommend the bronze axe, as it allows you to fell pines much more effectively.
Recipes with core wood – tools, weapons, and building components
What do I need core wood for? Core wood is required for one of the most impressive weapons in Valheim: the Stagbreaker. After the first boss fight with Eikthyr, you can build this huge mace to smash your enemies.
To craft it, you need:
- 20 x Core wood
- 5 x Stag Trophy
- 2 x Leather Scraps
If you prefer to kill your enemies from a distance, use the Finewood Bow. This has higher durability compared to the regular bow and also does more damage. Additionally, you will aim much more accurately with it, as the trajectory is nearly straight. To craft it, you need:
- 10 x Fine Wood
- 10 x Core wood
- 2 x Deer Hide
Core wood is also required if you want to craft an iron pickaxe. This is significantly more durable and effective than the antler pickaxe. To craft it, you need:
- 20 x Iron Ingots
- 3 x Core wood
If you have too much core wood, you can also convert it into coal. It is important that you do not have any other type of wood in your inventory, as the charcoal kiln automatically processes the wood with the lowest quality.
This is what you can build with core wood: Once you pick up core wood for the first time, you will unlock new structures to build. You can then build a 4m wooden pole and 4m round logs. Both are also available in a 2m variant.
The building components are used to reinforce your house. Alternatively, you can also use the core wood structures to build a wooden cabin.
Especially reinforcing structures is important once you want to reach a large longhouse or storage house. For large construction projects, you should therefore rely on core wood as building material from the beginning. In the later part of the game, core wood structures also complement stone buildings very well and provide a visual highlight.
There are plenty of visual highlights in Valheim, especially when Thor flies through the clouds with his chariot during a thunderstorm. At least one player believes they have seen the thunder god Thor in Valheim and provides evidence for it.
