In the new action RPG Magic: Legends, a kind of Dungeon Master or director ensures that you are always faced with challenges and that quests never become too frustrating.
What gameplay mechanics did the developers introduce? Perhaps you know the situation: you find yourself in a hack and slash scenario where you just can’t progress. This can lead to frustration. Or it flows so well that the game presents no challenge at all.
Exactly here is where the “Director” feature of Magic: Legends comes into play. The Director monitors your gameplay progression and recognizes whether you are progressing well or poorly. Accordingly, it adjusts the quests for you. Essentially, it modifies the missions in real-time so that you are never too frustrated or feel underwhelmed.
A director adjusts the quests in Magic: Legends for you
How exactly does this feature work? The Director, or “director”, changes when and where which monsters spawn. While in other hack and slashes, you always find predetermined monsters at specific points in the levels, this is not the case in the exciting action RPG Magic: Legends.
As you fight your way through the game areas, monsters appear that are selected for you based on your play style. If you are progressing slowly, easier enemies with weaker powers will appear. If you are progressing too well, a legendary monster may show up that possesses special powers with effects like Deathtouch, Chilled, or Swiftness, putting you up against a tough challenge.
Additionally, the Director may decide to give you a break and sprinkle a calm segment into the quest. The system works in such a way that the intensity of the missions is meant to feel like a roller coaster ride.
What is special about this feature? Essentially, you receive individualized missions with challenges tailored to you and your current play style. The quests still provide predetermined elements; after all, they are telling a story. They are therefore not completely generated during gameplay.
However, the quests adapt in terms of difficulty to you. Missions are designed to always be challenging, but never unfair. How this feels, you will find out later this year. Because the release of the PC version of Magic: Legends is still planned for 2020.
What do you think of this system? Would you prefer static missions with predetermined enemies, or do you think the Director is good?
