Today, on January 31st, the early access phase of the survival RPG Conan Exiles has started. A guide will lead you through the first steps.
First, you decide whether you want to play online or “locally”. If you choose to go online, you have the option between official and unofficial servers, which are categorized into PvE, PvP, and PvP Blitz (with a wipe after 30 days).
After choosing a server, you will create your hero from eleven peoples, choose the deity you want to worship, and customize your appearance and your name. Over time, Funcom plans to provide additional options for further character customization.
The First Steps – Collect Everything
Next, you will find yourself in the desert. Look around and read the letter on the rock. It’s also important to take the water bottle, or you will die of thirst. Interact with the large stone tablet to learn more about the backstory. Now you must follow the stone path out of the desert.
Collect stones and sticks along the way and gather plant fibers from the bushes. This way, you can quickly craft clothing, basic tools, and weapons.
Crafting – How to Craft Items
Crafting is one of the most important actions in the game. In your inventory, you can see on the right side which recipes your hero has already learned. If you click on one, you will see which ingredients you need to craft the corresponding item. You need to gather these resources in the world. Once you have found enough, click on the recipe and select “Craft”. You will then craft the item and can use it directly. In the left inventory, you can see the items you are carrying, and in the center, your attributes are listed.
As you level up, you can increase attributes like strength, vitality, or agility and learn new recipes. Simply click the button to learn new recipes. Some recipes require more than one point that you earn per level up. Sometimes you need to level up several times before you can learn a recipe. It then appears in your recipe list and can be used as described.
Building – Build Houses and Fortresses
Another important aspect of Conan Exiles is building a shelter. The sandstorms in the game can be deadly, so you should quickly build a small hut. Additionally, you can store your gear there. To build a shelter, you first need the corresponding recipe. Then you gather all the necessary resources. Now you create the individual pieces needed to build the house. You start with a foundation, drag it into your hotbar, select it, and then indicate where it should be built. In the same way, you place walls, doors, windows, and more in the world.
Decoration works the same way. You need the recipe, the resources, craft the item, drag it into the hotbar, and then place it where you want it. You can rotate the items using the mouse scroll wheel. Shift plus scroll wheel determines the height of the object. You can build your fortresses against a rock face or even underwater. You should always upgrade your buildings. Because the higher their tier level, the more resistant they are and the longer they withstand an attack. To upgrade, simply craft the necessary objects, point to the building you want to upgrade, and click on it.
If you knock down wild ones instead of killing them and drag them to your camp, you can chain them to the Wheel of Pain. This breaks their will and you get loyal thralls. However, you need to ensure you give them food, as this supports their loyalty. You can craft a simple porridge from plant fibers.
The thralls will perform the job they had before their enslavement. A archer, for example, will always remain an archer. Accordingly, you should use them in line with their skills. In the world, you will also find special NPCs that can become special thralls. Shemites, for example, are excellent archers.
If you have enslaved craftsmen, let them work at the crafting stations to unlock new recipes. A Cimmerian blacksmith, for example, will provide you with recipes for Cimmerian weapons and higher tier items.
Religion and Avatars – Make Offerings and Summon the Gods
During character creation, you decide which of the gods Crom, Set, Yog, or Mitra you wish to worship. Crom does not care if you worship him and will not be summoned. For the other gods, you must first build an altar using a recipe. Then, craft a special tool. For Set, it’s a knife, for Mitra an ankh, and for Yog a stone club. If you use these items on an NPC after you have killed them, you will receive a special crafting resource. You will use this at the altar to craft more useful items.
Followers of Set receive antidotes, followers of Mitra regenerate faster, and Yogites receive blessed human flesh. Each time you craft something at the altar this way, you gain favor with the god. You will use the gathered favor along with necessary resources to upgrade the altar. Once your altar reaches the highest tier and you have a thrall who is a priest of that god, you can craft the summoning spell. You can cast the spell anywhere. However, it destroys the altar and the priest. After that, the avatar of your god will appear.
During the summoning ceremony and while controlling the avatar, you are vulnerable to attacks. A beam of light also indicates to your enemies where you are. It takes about a minute for the avatar to appear. If you are killed, the summoning fails. Once you have summoned the avatar of your god, you can control it for one minute and, for example, trample your enemies’ fortress. If you are killed, the avatar disappears immediately.
Follow the Story
Time and again, you will encounter NPCs or find books and letters that tell you more about the backstory of the Exiled Lands. You will explore ancient ruins, descend into dark dungeons, and learn more about the civilization that once ruled this land. Conan Exiles is not merely a sandbox. The story plays a significant role and adds additional depth to the game.
If you want to host your own server, you can make various settings. For example, whether PvP is allowed, how many players are allowed (maximum 70), and whether the summoning of the gods is active. As an admin, you also gain access to the admin panel, through which you can spawn any item in the game.
If you want to play on unofficial servers, use the filter system to find the right server for you. The servers are divided into Purist, Relaxed, Hardcore, Roleplaying, and Experimental.
