In Call of Duty: Warzone, the developers want to deliver a new experience in 2026 that attempts bold innovations. They are looking to the predecessor for inspiration.
What have the developers announced? The developers of Call of Duty: Warzone have announced a major innovation on X (formerly Twitter). They plan to take a bold step in Spring 2026 and release a new experience for Call of Duty: Warzone.
However, it won’t be entirely new, as it is inspired by the predecessor of Warzone, Call of Duty: Blackout.

From Predecessor to Innovation
What is Call of Duty: Blackout? CoD: Blackout was the predecessor of Call of Duty: Warzone, released in 2018 instead of the campaign of CoD: Black Ops 4. The game mode was the first attempt by the developers to create a competitor for the then-nascent “Battle Royale” scene.
Unlike Warzone, the shooter was less realistic, allowing for a lot of climbing and relatively free movement. This was supported by a map that included the zombie maps from the part and allowed players to fight against AI opponents, who dropped weapons like the “Ray Gun” and “Monkey Bomb” known from CoD Zombies as loot.
The gadgets were also somewhat different from those in Warzone. Players could place traps on the map, drive toy cars around, or climb onto rooftops with the grappling gun. There were also zombies in the game mode.
What can be expected from the Warzone update? The announcement of the “bold new experience” has sparked player ideas about what content can be expected from the predecessor to Warzone. Many are primarily looking forward to the new Avalon map, where the innovations will be experienced.
Players like @Puma_708 on X.com primarily associate Blackout with the absence of loadouts, metas, and the same weapons for all players, as these can only be picked up from the ground.
Especially the loadout mechanic and the current meta of Call of Duty: Warzone are repeatedly mentioned in the comments under the announcement on X.com as the most important changes and something that must definitely be learned from Blackout.
That Call of Duty: Warzone is returning to its roots is not unusual. Many players look forward to nostalgic content or gameplay “like it used to be.” The competition from Fortnite also repeatedly brings back old seasons: Fortnite: Epic Games announces new mode, bringing joy to veteran players
