Campers are perceived by many players as a major problem in Call of Duty. But which CoD actually supports the camper playstyle more – Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War? An expert gives a clear answer.
What is it about? Campers are probably the most disliked type of players in Call of Duty, alongside cheaters. Whether in Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare, or earlier titles in the series – campers have always been criticized.
The YouTuber and CoD expert “TheXclusiveAce” has been publishing analyses and gameplay videos about Call of Duty for several years. He has now taken on the question – Which CoD is actually the bigger camper fest? Cold War or CoD MW?
For Ace, it is clear that Modern Warfare provides better conditions for campers. We show you the background of his analysis on MeinMMO. If you want to see Ace’s full English video, we embed it here for you:
Camper is not just a camper
How does “Camping” define itself? Right at the start, “XclusiveAce” clarifies what “Camping” actually means for him. Of course, generally, a camper is a player who takes a well-covered position for an extended period and waits for an unsuspecting victim to run into their crosshairs. However, there are also phases in the match where such behavior is important for achieving victory goals. Therefore, he distinguishes between:
- Camping
- Holding a power position
Camping – A player takes a completely random position on the map and holds their corner, where they have set up their tent. The position offers a good view of all accesses, and it is difficult in a 1vs1 scenario to reclaim the taken corner. Through this gameplay behavior, nothing contributes to the team’s victory. Campers are, in his opinion, more loners who care little about achieving the goals of a match.
Holding a power position – The description is quite similar to that for camping. However, the difference is that you support your team from such positions. Let’s take the mode “Domination” as an example, where changing objectives must be taken. You set up in a corner, wait for enemies on their way to the objective, and use your “Power Position” to gain an advantage. By supporting your team in reaching the objective, you are not counted as a camper by “XclusiveAce.”
Ace therefore finds it hard to speak of camping in modes like “Team Deathmatch” or “Free for All.” In these modes, it’s about dying less and getting more kills. By camping, one often helps their team or increases their chances of having a good placement because they utilize the advantages of their position to land more kills than to get deaths.
A camper is, for Ace, a player who only looks out for themselves and thereby often brings disadvantages to the team.
Map design, TTK, Ghost perk – CoD MW plays into the hands of campers
Why is CoD MW better for campers? Ace is not about condemning the camping playstyle. Everyone can experience the game in their own way and utilize the existing mechanics to their advantage. However, what stresses him are game mechanics that support camping. In this regard, he sees Modern Warfare clearly ahead.
- Map design: “Cold War” maps generally offer more options for power positions, and often there are counter-positions to put them under pressure.
- Footstep sounds: Loud “Footsteps” support camper gameplay, as camping players can hear mobile enemies better. CoD MW offers no perk for quieter movements, Cold War has something like “Ninja”
- Time-to-Kill: The low TTK in CoD MW is better for campers as enemies have less time to react to campers.
- Ghost perk: Protects you from UAVs. Only works in Cold War when you move. In CoD MW, the protection is always activated.
He emphasizes that there are also numerous exceptions, and for example, the maps in Cold War also provide many spots for camping. However, in a general comparison of Modern Warfare and Cold War, for him, CoD MW is clearly the game that supports camping more than the CoD from 2020.
However, there is a field upgrade in Cold War that did not exist in CoD MW, which Ace considers very camper-friendly: the proximity mine. With this gadget, you can detect enemies moving through the effective range, giving a significant advantage if the opponent does not counter it with the perk “Spy.”
All in all, Modern Warfare, for “TheXclusiveAce,” clearly supports camper gameplay more than the current Black Ops Cold War.
What is your opinion on this? Do you feel similarly, or do you have a completely different impression that camping is worse this year than in CoD MW?
