Chainsaw Man continues this year – however, not as Season 2, but as a movie. The creators of the anime have now revealed why they made this decision.
Why is the next arc of Chainsaw Man coming as a movie? The animation studio MAPPA, responsible for Chainsaw Man, was represented by chief Manabu Otsuka at Anime Expo 2025. He revealed in an interview with ComicBook why the team decided to release the upcoming arc as a movie:
We believe that the original work of creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, the Reze arc, was perfect as a movie. The cinematic expression, the action, and the explosions look so much better as a film. We also believe that this was the best way to convey the story to the fans so that it can be as grand as possible.
Thus, the story of the arc is supposed to fit better as a film. As a movie, both the story and the action scenes can be highlighted even better.
In the public panel, Otsuka added that the Reze arc is a fan favorite (via ScreenRant). The movie is intended to allow even more people to experience the arc, which is why the cinema was the better choice for the animation team.
When will it be in theaters? In Germany, the Reze arc will premiere in theaters on October 29, 2025.
Season 2 of Chainsaw Man still uncertain
What about Season 2? When Otsuka is asked about a Season 2, he is uncertain. He does not know yet whether it will become a trend to show the arcs of Chainsaw Man as movies. The team would decide per arc whether it would fit better as a movie or a season. Accordingly, he cannot yet say whether and when Season 2 will come.
Another factor for why the decision is not yet made is the success of the film. Depending on how the Reze arc movie is received by audiences, the team will decide how to proceed afterward.
A similar trend is being followed by the anime of Demon Slayer. Here, the final arcs are no longer shown as seasons, but are presented as a trilogy in theaters. It all starts in theaters with the first part on September 18, 2025.
Jujutsu Kaisen has also shown the prequel of Satoru Gojo as a movie. The film was titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0. However, the anime has already confirmed that it will continue with a Season 3.
