Actually, the beta of Camelot Unchained was supposed to start at the end of March, but had to be postponed indefinitely due to issues with the ability system. After several months of hard work, the game is now back on course for beta.
The Long Road to Beta
In recent months, the team has been working on resolving this issue, completely reprogramming the entire system and replacing it with a significantly better one.
“As part of the redesign of the ability system, our team took the old system with tens of thousands of lines of code, put it on a diet, redesigned it, and replaced it with a new sleeker system with only two thousand lines of code. Now we are trying to reach the same number of abilities that we had previously with the old system a few months ago.”
According to Mark Jacobs, the team is on the right track, which means that the beta should start this summer. To bridge the gap, the team also streams daily again – always starting at 4:30 PM on their Twitch channel. You can find the current streaming schedule for Camelot Unchained.
Update of the Building Tool
C.U.B.E. – the Minecraft-like building tool – has received quite a bit of love in recent weeks, including some bug fixes, a major UI overhaul, and new block shapes and tools, which now finally allow players to create round constructions.
While the building fans were excited, some other players wondered why the team is currently working on C.U.B.E. and not focused entirely on the beta. In his response, Mark Jacobs pointed out that C.U.B.E. is part of Camelot Unchained and that the improvements to the building tools and memory usage will also improve the main game. After all, the game relies on players building large and interesting structures that other players can then destroy for fun and profit, Jacobs emphasizes.
CSE Establishes New Studio
Those who have been following Camelot Unchained for a while know that one of the biggest hurdles in development was the difficult recruitment of open programming positions. This is partly due to the fact that CSE has its studio in Fairfax, Virginia, on the East Coast, while most of the industry, and thus the employees, are located on the West Coast.
For this reason, CSE has now established a second studio in Seattle and was able to fill the open positions immediately and hire four new programmers. The newly gained manpower is expected to significantly accelerate the further development of the game, according to Mark Jacobs.
