The creators of Frostpunk 2 have announced a modding competition. The game is currently competing for players on Steam. Now the developers want to encourage the community to improve the game in various categories. There are great prizes to be won.
What kind of game is this?
- Frostpunk is set in a dystopian, alternate reality where the Earth has turned into an ice desert. The first part is about sheer survival – one of the best survival games you can play right now.
- The sequel takes place 30 years later. Survival is ensured, now you are to rebuild society. People want structure and rules; you manage more of a small city-state than just a settlement.
- Political decisions are as important as expansion and supply of goods – and everything is fraught with dangers. Even those who want to be really nice can quickly become a dictator.
How is the game doing currently? Frostpunk 2 is aimed more at a niche. The game is incredibly difficult and allows no mistakes. Developer 11 Bit is known for games that push your morals to the limits and constantly present you with tough decisions.
After the first part was well received, Frostpunk 2 has some issues on Steam. Recent reviews are only at 68% and are therefore “mixed” – in contrast to all reviews, which stand at 75% “mostly positive” (as of July 15, 2025).
According to steamcharts, Frostpunk 2 still has 921 peak players and an average of 500 on Steam, while numbers for other platforms like PS5 and Xbox are missing. A major problem: the game lacks replayability.
A ton of prizes for everyone who wants to improve Frostpunk 2
11 Bit Studios allows its players to mod Frostpunk 2, and this works particularly easily through the Steam Workshop. In collaboration with the website mod.io, the developers have now announced a competition (on Steam).
In 5 categories, modders can win great prizes here:
- Mods for the best mechanics, the best Frostland mechanics, the best graphics, and the best politics will each receive an AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB in the Frostpunk 2 edition
- the best overall mod will even receive a proud $10,000 in prize money
- 3 more mods will be “honorably mentioned” and receive a goodie pack from 11 Bit
The graphics card is a strong choice for the upper mid-range and currently costs between around 350 and 450 euros on the market. The rules for participation are quite simple: mods should be creative, playable, and fun. Toxic content is, of course, prohibited. The submission deadline is August 22, and the winners will be announced on September 1.
11 Bit has a lot of experience with games that devour your soul. A good example is This War of Mine, where you play survivors in a war-torn city. If you like it rough, you can find a selection of the best post-apocalyptic games for PC, PS5, and Xbox here.
