Borderlands 4 has been officially announced. Now the guessing starts about what exactly is coming our way. But: At least one thing in the trailer already gives some hints.
This is the trailer: The newly presented trailer for Borderlands 4 itself doesn’t offer much. It lasts just one minute and 19 seconds and doesn’t feature any gameplay.
The trailer left a lot open, but initial theories are already emerging. Naturally, with such a trailer, the hunt for first clues is part of the fun. Therefore, fans are already dissecting the teaser frame by frame and searching for hints about what the game might be about.
Many small details are being analyzed, but one point could be a really good clue: A lettering at the end of the trailer. Let’s take a look at what the trailer might be hinting at. Warning! From here on, there are spoilers for Borderlands 3 and other parts of the series!

What could the trailer for Borderlands 4 mean?

What kind of moon is that? The moon flying through space in the trailer is likely the Pandora moon Elpis. We remember: The moon Elpis played a role in the Borderlands Pre-Sequel and turned out to be the key to the great vault on Pandora in Borderlands 3. The vault hunter Lilith had to sacrifice herself at the end to seal Elpis, so that it wouldn’t tear the planet Pandora apart.
However, it is evident from the trailer that there are still problems, because whatever is causing the meteor shower cannot be good for Elpis or Pandora.
In addition, the trailer shows a hand reaching for a Psycho mask. The theories on social media are already going in all directions, but some suspect that this could be an Eridian hand. Notably, an Eridian from the Pre-Sequel is mentioned: The “Watcher”.
Why the Watcher? The reason for this lies at the end of the trailer, as in the last seconds various Eridian-like inscriptions can be seen for a brief moment.
Players have already started attempting to find a possible translation:
In several posts, fans concluded that the translation could be “He is Watching. Break Free”, which could at least hint at the Watcher. Could he play a role in Borderlands 4?
At least the theoretical resolution sounds plausible, as the Watcher could suggest an exciting setting for Borderlands 4.
Who is the Watcher? He is a mysterious Eridian who briefly appears in the Pre-Sequel. The Borderlands Wiki summarizes: The Watcher has the ability to look into the future and warn of dangers. For instance, Colonel Zarpedon was warned by him about Handsome Jack. He also saves Athena from execution by Lilith.
Above all, the Watcher warns the vault hunters about a massive impending war. He suggests that as many vault hunters as possible should be gathered for it. And that would certainly be a damn exciting setting for the fourth part of Borderlands.
But: Of course, so far everything is pure speculation. It remains to be seen which direction the game will take. However, it is expected to be released in 2025 – so let’s hope that further information will not take too long to arrive.
