The heads of Diablo 4 talked about how the game should improve in the future. An important point is the “targeted farming,” which gives you more control over which items you receive.
What kind of improvements are there?
- In the Campfire chat on July 21, the developers discussed the future of Diablo 4. You can find a summary of the talk on MeinMMO.
- At its core, it was about fundamentally improving the gameplay: nerfed classes will be stronger again, quality updates are coming such as more chest space, and the endgame is set to become more extensive. A nerf for Nightmare Dungeons has already been implemented.
- Additionally, the hunt for equipment was in focus. With new content, you should find it easier to get the items you really want in the future.
How will loot farming be easier? Game Director Joe Shely and Associate Game Director Joe Piepiora talked about ways the “targeted loot” system of Diablo 4 will be expanded.
New content is planned, with which you can specifically search for an item you still need. What exactly these contents will be, the heads have not yet revealed. Currently, you have only 3 options to farm an item specifically:
- Hunt monster families that primarily drop certain item types
- Pick up chests from the Whispering Tree
- Open corresponding chests in Hell Floods
Additionally, improvements are planned that will help you see better which item actually upgrades your build. The discussion briefly touched on the often-requested loot filters, but without a date for when and in what form these will come.
So far, it has been a problem that even if you find the sought-after item, it does not represent an upgrade. The developers also want to address this, but have not yet specified a concrete change.

After 1.1.0: “Such a patch won’t happen again”
The heads emphasized that a patch like the heavily criticized patch 1.1.0 should not occur again. In that update, most classes and builds were nerfed, some of the best stats worsened, and players feel it makes everything less fun now.
Accordingly, the mood at the start of Season 1 was pretty low. In the emergency stream, the developers promised immediate changes and buffs with the upcoming patch 1.1.1, where especially the Sorceress and the Barbarian are set to receive a boost. They are currently at the bottom of the tier list.
Other changes, such as the plan to make gems a crafting material, will only come with Season 2. However, there are supposed to be additional patches with improvements between patch 1.1.1 and Season 2.
One of the biggest problems was even addressed by Joe Piepiora: the size of the loot chest. According to the head, there is a technical issue underlying this that many players simply cannot comprehend:
