Since the announcement of Overwatch 2, many fans have been wondering what the game is supposed to be: a DLC, a sequel, or something completely different? Overwatch head Jeff Kaplan from Blizzard has a very clear statement: This is a sequel.
This is what Kaplan says: The Creative Director of Overwatch, Jeff Kaplan, spoke with the print magazine Edge (issue 340, via PCGamesN). He made a comment about what Overwatch 2 is supposed to be:
A sequel is a brand new game with new gameplay and features, as well as an evolution of the game world. Overwatch 2 is clearly a sequel by my definition.
This clears up the question of whether Overwatch 2 is supposed to be more like a DLC for Overwatch.
Since the two games will merge, this assumption was often in the air.
What makes Overwatch 2 special?
This is how development is progressing: Kaplan commented on how Overwatch 2 is being developed. He provided an insight into how large the sequel will actually be.
The team developing Overwatch 2 is “twice as large” as the original team.
The game’s engine is also supposed to receive many overhauls and become larger than Overwatch (1). Kaplan says:
“Overwatch 2 is an order of magnitude larger than the original game. That’s why we treat it like a sequel.”

Work on Overwatch 2 has been in full swing for a long time. Overwatch 1 was even neglected to allow Overwatch 2 to progress.
This is all new in Overwatch 2: From the interview with Kaplan and information released during or after Blizzcon 2019, we already know a bit about the new content. Overwatch 2 offers:
- the new game mode “Push”
- new heroes like the already introduced Sojourn
- new maps for existing modes and for “Push”
- story and hero missions with a talent system
Especially the many new maps are something that Kaplan says you would “expect from a sequel”.
When exactly Overwatch 2 will be released is still unknown to Kaplan. However, there are already hints:
