David Vonderhaar made some jokes about matchmaking in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Vonderhaar is the Studio Design Director of Treyarch, the studio behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The jokes did not go over well.
What were the jokes? Vonderhaar tweeted a quote from a YouTuber in celebration of the 7th anniversary of Black Ops 2:
See? I told you that skill-based matchmaking is not evil. (I am just teasing you. Connection > everything, you PUB-destroying monsters).

That’s a problem: Some players of the current Modern Warfare took this as a provocation against Infinity Ward, the developers of the new CoD. They have been criticized for matchmaking for some time now.
Players are convinced that Modern Warfare uses a skill-based system and the developers neither agree nor deny that. This is currently causing greater tensions.

Boss has to apologize
Here’s how it went on: Vonderhaar did not expect the situation to escalate like this. For him, it was just a joke. He didn’t know it was such a serious topic and he didn’t want to take any “shots”:
I didn’t know that was a thing and I was just messing with Jordan [the head of Infinity Ward]. I guess I messed up. Infinity Ward has an incredibly good matchmaking, especially for cross-platform. No shots fired. Quote me.

To many players, it seemed that Vonderhaar was now trying to take control of the situation and limit the damage. Modern Warfare is currently facing some problems – not only the matchmaking but also weapons that are hard to balance and more.
What’s the status now? Vonderhaar has now deleted all tweets regarding this topic. However, the images related to it are circulating online and being discussed. Players are now hoping for a response from Infinity Ward to finally clarify the matter.
