10 years have passed since Fallout 4 was released and after the release of Fallout 76, many fans are now waiting for the fifth installment of the series. Fans may have to wait a long time, but at least there is some good news: the game has been greenlit by Bethesda.
What has been revealed? In the latest episode of the Xbox Two Podcast, Jez Corden (source: YouTube), the executive editor of the podcast, talked about how Bethesda is approaching the development of Fallout as a franchise. According to him, he has information that Bethesda has greenlit Fallout 5 for future development.
The Skyrim studio was initially divided, as they were simultaneously continuing work on their MMO, which has now been cancelled for 2025. They had to weigh whether to continue investing in their MMO to later compete against WoW, ESO, and other established brands, or if the resources should rather go towards Fallout 5.
The latter was the case. Regarding Fallout 5, there is still no information about the game in general, only that it has been greenlit for development. When the news reached the fans, there was excitement, but also enough jokes about Bethesda’s development.
Fans joke about Fallout 5
What are fans joking about? Even though the news about Fallout 5 has many fans of the franchise feeling positive, there is one point that many view with skepticism, which is the necessary development time for the new installment.
Bethesda has already set a precedent with The Elder Scrolls: 6: fans have been eagerly waiting for 14 years for the successor to Skyrim, and there is still no trailer and little information about the game. Many expect the same procedure for Fallout 5 if you look at the comments on Reddit:
- “I think I’ll celebrate in ten years.” – disastermarch35
- “In 2035, at the launch of the PS7, it will be amazing. Until they figure out that the NPCs are walking into walls and cutting through floors. The campaign ends with a cliffhanger that requires DLC, and the game has remarkably low-resolution textures.” – Disastrous-Pair-6754
- “It’s coming out on October 24, 2077.” – CharlesBronsonsHair
- “This is crazy for me. I know Bethesda games are huge and they have other projects, but getting greenlit for Fallout 5 10 years after Fallout 4 is insane.” – DunnoMouse
- “I swear they hate us. I still remember where I was when the first teaser trailer came out in 2018.” – said EcstaticGod regarding TES6
Why is development taking so long? As Jez Corden also mentioned in the podcast, Bethesda has other projects in the pipeline that are also in development. The largest project is likely TES6, but the studio is also continuing work on Starfield and a DLC.
Why exactly Fallout 5 has received the green light after 10 years is unclear to many fans, but at least they now have another reason to be excited for the next 10 years.
