The update for the sieges in Lineage 2 Revolution (iOS, Android) is finally here! We were able to try out the mass PvP battles. Read here how they play!
Lineage 2 Revolution has so far been almost pure PvE fun. Aside from small 1vs1 duels in the arena, there was nothing for PvP fans to do in Netmarble’s mobile MMO. But today, on December 13, 2017, the long-awaited siege mode is in the game. Here, guilds (clans) and individual players can participate in 30vs30 and even 50vs50 mass battles in PvP.
We were invited to a test on the eve of the release and sieged some fortresses with the developers.
Open battles or guild wars?
There are two types of sieges:
- The open 30vs30 battles.
- and the 50vs50 fights, which are only available for guilds every Friday.
The open battles – more like “casual PvP”
These 30vs30 battles are open to all players from level 11 and take place every Monday and Wednesday. Any player can register and will be thrown into a round as soon as enough players are gathered.
Your gear and level don’t matter. All players will be boosted to 90,000 combat power, receive all skills at maximum, and can even choose their class freely! Ideal for trying out different options. Especially for players who are not yet level 31 and have not yet decided on a subclass, this option is useful.
The guild battles – the “serious PvP”
In the 50vs50 guild battle mode, however, you play your regular hero with its known stats. These fights take place every Friday.
All guilds that want to participate actively bid for a fortress. The one who bids the highest can then fight for the respective castle, and the winners receive a powerful buff for the entire guild for a week.
An epic mess with strategy and tactics
Once a round starts, epic chaos begins. Because it’s about capturing the core of the enemy fortress. However, you must get past gates with devilishly strong defensive towers. This can only be done as a team, but the opponent has the same goal.
Therefore, you need to gain advantages. Fortunately, powerful buffs await you if you capture the altars in the center of the map. An altar gives the team a 10 percent buff on damage or hit points. Capturing both altars even grants a 30 percent improvement! However, the altars can only be captured by one team at certain times.
The rush for the buff altars!
During this time, all team members run like crazy towards the altar trying to capture it. Meanwhile, the opponents are not idle and attack. Anyone dealing damage cannot capture an altar, leading to wild battles until one side prevails.
The carnage at the towers
If one side has collected enough buffs or feels strong enough even without buffs, this side can brave the attack on one of the two gates of the enemy fortress. This should always happen as a team because the defensive towers are strong and can kill single heroes in seconds! So similar to the towers in a MOBA, except that in Lineage 2 Revolution, you don’t have soulless minions to send ahead.
Protect the King!
Once you have finally overcome the towers with great losses, you can advance to the core of the enemy fortress and capture it. However, only the previously designated leader of your team can capture the enemy core. In the guild war, this is always the guild leader, in open battles, it is the player with the best rating or a candidate that the whole team can agree on beforehand.
You must fiercely protect your leader in the last phase so he can capture the core in peace. If you do not capture the enemy within a total of 30 minutes, the round ends in a draw. However, if you win, in the 50vs50 the fortress belongs to you for a week, and the entire guild receives buffs. Additionally, there are big loot crates that are also available in open PvP.
Respawns, rankings, and Pay2Win concerns
While you are slaughtering your enemies and capturing buffs, you can also complete special quests and rise in ranks. This gives you additional buffs and an advantage over the enemy. Once you die, you can rejoin after a certain waiting time. This time gets longer as the game progresses.
However, you can jump back into the fray against 30 red diamonds (the real money currency). You can also earn diamonds regularly in the game, but those who have hoarded a lot of gems for real money definitely have an advantage.
Conclusion – A fun new game mode for fans of orderly chaos
For me, my first rounds in the new PvP mode were quite chaotic. Only later did it become clear that there’s a significant amount of strategy behind it. Because those who – like us at the test event – just randomly beat up enemies will never capture the enemy fortress in 30 minutes.
So if you want to win, you have to strategically capture buffs, distract enemies, and capture the fortress at the right moment. I’m already looking forward to trying the sieges again in the regular game and approaching it with more tactics.
However, what gives me some concern is the possibility of resurrecting immediately with premium currency. We will see how heavily this option will ultimately be used, but I fear that a large stock of red diamonds will soon become a requirement for top PvP guilds.
Additionally, there were still some performance issues during the pre-test, but this could have been due to the testing environment and may be better in the live version.
