In FIFA 22, players are currently hoping for upgrades for their new special cards based on real results from football. Bayer Leverkusen has now slightly hindered such an upgrade – and jokingly apologizes via Twitter.
What’s going on? Currently, the “Road to the Knockouts” event is running in FIFA 22 with special cards that become better as the respective teams achieve certain milestones in European competitions.
One such card has also been given to Nabil Fekir from Betis Sevilla. It is currently particularly popular among FIFA players because:
- First, he is available through an SBC. So you don’t need to pull him from packs or use the transfer market.
- Second, he already has really good stats.
Accordingly, many players are hoping that Fekir might get two upgrades.
- One, if Betis Sevilla wins three out of four group matches in the Europa League.
- And the second, if Betis Sevilla advances to the knockout phase.
No wonder that many players are rooting for Betis Sevilla for FIFA reasons right now. But those following the Europa League have seen: In the recent match, there was only a 1:1 – against the German club Bayer Leverkusen. The funny thing is: The “Werkself” apparently knows that some FIFA players had bet on Betis.
Leverkusen’s joking apology regarding Fekir
Already on the day of the match, Bayer Leverkusen wrote a short message on their English-speaking Twitter channel, which was received with amusement in the FIFA community:
“Dear Football Twitter. Please stop asking us for a loss at #BetisB04 [match hashtag] so you can get your Fekir upgrade. We need the 3 points and more special cards for our players. Thank you. Sincerely, Bayer 04 Leverkusen.”

This post already caused laughter among some FIFA fans. Among others, FIFA YouTuber Zweback responded directly with a post and tried to persuade Leverkusen perhaps not to win:
Dear Leverkusen,
Normally, we want you to win in this situation. But Fekir is a very special card and you have the best card in the game aka POTM Flo Wirtz. So we ask you, just this one time, maybe not to win. And not to win in the next game either. Thanks.

This is how the match went: Betis Sevilla and Leverkusen met on Thursday evening, October 21st. For those eyeing Fekir upgrades, it looked good fifteen minutes before the end: After a handball, there was a penalty for Betis Sevilla, which Iglesias converted to make it 1:0.
But to the joy of all Leverkusen fans – and presumably to the frustration of all Fekir fans – the “Werkself” managed to equalize. Leverkusen’s Andrich shot in the 82nd minute, the shot was deflected and ended up in the net. Even a win was still within reach for Leverkusen – but it remained a draw.
And here Leverkusen also responded again – with a nice apology to the FIFA fans:
Is the Fekir upgrade off the table now? No, because Betis still has three group matches left that they could win. So, theoretically. There is one more against Leverkusen, and then against Celtic Glasgow and Ferencváros Budapest.
Three wins are of course highly ambitious. If that doesn’t work out, there is still the possible upgrade for advancing. Because in the group table, Leverkusen and Sevilla are at the top with 7 points each and still unbeaten.
How the card develops, the coming weeks will show. In the FIFA world, the Weekend League is coming up again. But apparently some players want to take this week off.
