Shortly before the launch of Battlefield 6, the developers talked about one of the biggest strengths of the shooter series and why it can now shine again in its former glory after disappointing experiences with Battlefield 2042.
What strength is being referred to? No other online shooter has been able to depict such spectacular large battles between infantry, vehicles, and aircraft in the past, where almost everything breaks and debris flies everywhere.
In recent times, Battlefield has somewhat lost sight of this core DNA. From a player’s perspective, one might think that Electronic Arts aimed to compete with the major rival Call of Duty to achieve comparable sales success with a similar gaming experience.
However, according to an interview with pcgamer.com, there is another reason why the wonderfully chaotic destruction frenzy was hardly present in, for example, Battlefield 2042 and is now set to make a comeback in Battlefield 6.
Tests, Optimizations, and Iterations
What is the magic trick? In the interview, technical director Christian Buhl is asked how the team can ramp up the destruction while maintaining stable performance. The developer’s response:
Perhaps the only magic trick is that we are no longer on the PS4 or Xbox One. So we’ve raised the minimum requirements in terms of memory and CPU speed a bit, and that of course contributes to better overall performance. For example, as we are not trying to run the game on a PS4.
After that, Buhl adds that a lot of work is also needed to achieve this result. Many tests, optimizations, and iterations are required. In addition, the strengths of the Frostbite engine, which was developed for Battlefield and the destruction system, come into play.
Since Battlefield 2042 is also based on the Frostbite engine, it seems that the technical limitations of the previous console generation prevented the disappointing predecessor from fully utilizing its destructive potential.
To ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible at launch, there will be a Day 1 patch. The developers have now announced what the update will deliver in detail.
