Battlefield 2042 aims to set new standards in terms of map size. What does it actually look like regarding player counts? The answer depends on whether you are on PC and the new console generation (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) or playing on the old consoles PS4 and Xbox One.
The upcoming multiplayer shooter Battlefield 2042 was recently officially announced; many details have been known since then. The game will launch with 7 maps. However, some of these maps are significantly larger than anything the Battlefield franchise has seen before. The largest launch map, Breakaway, is said to be about twice the size of El Alamein from Battlefield 1942 – one of the largest maps in the series to date.

Given this context, many are wondering: what is the maximum player count?
Which platform supports how many players?
In general, Battlefield 2042 allows up to 128 players in a match. Therefore, two 64-player teams can compete against each other, engaging in massive battles with infantry and various war equipment. However, the exact number of maximum possible players heavily depends on the platform you are on.
Maximum player count on PC: Here it is up to 128 players. By the way, if a match is not full, they plan to fill matches with bots.
Maximum player count on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: The next-gen or current-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft can also support up to 128 players on the virtual battlefield with their power.
Maximum player count on PS4 and Xbox One: Here there is a significant cut – namely by half. The old-gen consoles can support a maximum of 64 players – that is, two 32-player teams. The aging hardware also negatively impacts the size of the maps. On PS4 and Xbox One, the maps will only be a portion of the new maps, thus being significantly smaller.
In short: The experience on last-gen is likely to be noticeably different from that on the current console generation and on PC. At least the developers from DICE promised that other features, such as ‘Levolution’, can also be experienced on the old consoles.
