In Baldur’s Gate 3, players spend tons of hours in the character editor to create their perfect hero. Once they are done, it turns out they have to customize a second character – the guardian, a mysterious figure they encounter in dreams.
Many players hoped they could build a deeper bond with their created character in the game. They can, just in a different way than they thought.

When the hottest guardian is a mindflayer
What’s the problem? When you reach Act 3 after spending hours creating the hottest of all guardians

What’s going on? The issue arises in Act 3 of the game. After players spend hours creating their ideal guardian, it turns out that this character is not quite what they thought. The guardian turns out to be an illithid (mindflayer), known as the Emperor, who is actually Balduran.
This surprising twist didn’t sit well with many players – especially those who were hoping for a romance with their custom-designed guardian.
What do players say? Many players designed the guardian to be intentionally unattractive to cope better with the disappointment in Act 3. One player on reddit summarizes the frustration of many succinctly:
That’s why I just hit the random button until I get a guardian so ugly that I’m actually relieved when Act 3 comes

Is the romance worth it? The romance with the mindflayer gives you the achievement “Mind Blown”. To unlock this achievement, you need to fulfill two special conditions that then give you the option to get intimate with the mindflayer. By the way, the achievement is quite rare: Only 12.5% of players have the achievement (as of 25.08.2024).
This one-night stand also has no impact on your other relationships in the game. So if you’re interested in engaging in the adventure without any further consequences, you can do so without worry. You just have to expect some disgusted looks.
